I’ve heard/seen the same! They are engaging in the same fuck shit they did in LA.

One of my family members lives in Charlotte, he called yesterday to let us know that ICE is hanging out at the Home Depot in the parking lot harassing contractors and their labor workers. He noticed it yesterday when he was inside Home Depot. People around Charlotte are pushing back.

There are so many heartbreaking stories emerging in NC & everywhere that immigration enforcement is taking place. But there are also stories like this. Everywhere there is ICE & CBP, there are also people fighting like hell to protect their communities. This is no small thing.

If ICE was there, she said, "We weren't going to let our kids off the bus."

Because these children are OURS to protect. Because it is a community's responsibility to look after each other.

Vaughn received word that ICE was present at a mobile home park near her school, and she knew students and their families lived there. She quickly organized a crew of educators and organizers so that when kids took the bus home to the mobile home park, there were trusted adults there for them.

This is a small thing, but I've been thinking about this quote from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools educator Mechelle Vaughn.

"El pueblo unido jamás será vencido" is a way of life. Truly.

You can read my reporting on the NC raids today. People of course are terrified, with many undocumented & mixed-status families staying home or otherwise laying low. But all around them community organizers, educators, faith leaders, and local residents are mobilizing to help. It is deeply moving.

I went home to Southeast L.A. to cover the immigration raids there. And this week I've covered the raids in my adopted home of NC. Nothing--and I mean NOTHING--will give you hope like speaking to immigrant organizers and locals fighting back.
