I cringe every time some politician (or, as the author points out, a white person professing to be an ally), says "this isn't who we are."  As the author accurately points out, this is EXACTLY who we are. And we have a 600-year history of violence and subjugation to prove it.

But first we have to acknowledge that the reason CEOs are getting paid insane amounts of money is not because the “free market” dictates that they’re worth it. It’s because we’re letting them get away with it. @rbreich.bsky.social

3. Use antitrust laws to break up big corporations that dominate their industries, raising prices for consumers & reducing job prospects for workers.
4. Raise taxes on corporations whose CEOs are paid hundreds of times more than the workers.

because increasingly, part of their compensation is in shares of stock.

CEOs can now effectively give themselves a raise, while workers get the shaft.

What can we do about it?

1. Raise the federal minimum wage, currently a measly $7.25 an hour, which hasn’t been increased since 2009!

But instead of sharing these profits with their workers, corporations and their CEOs siphon them off into stock buybacks.

Stock buybacks reduce the number of shares available for investors to purchase, which drives up the value of the remaining shares.

Why is that? Not because CEOs have become so much more valuable than their workers over the past 50 years. No, it’s because the system is rigged.

Big corporations chronically underpay workers compared to their workers’ productivity — that is, the value of their output — on the job.

However, if worker pay had increased at the same rate as CEO pay since the late 1960s, the typical worker would be earning $432 an hour!

Of course, greedy corporations aren’t paying their workers anywhere near that amount. Instead, they’re paying their CEOs 280 TIMES MORE than the typical worker.

What would a typical worker earn now if their wages had grown at the same rate as corporate CEO pay over the past 50 years?

In 1968, the typical worker earned $25/hr., including benefits, in today’s dollars.

By 2024, the typical worker’s earnings, including benefits, had increased to only $36/hr.

2. @gavinnewsom.bsky.social became SF mayor thanks to his support of marriage equality. As @governor.ca.gov he REPEATEDLY sold out the #LGBTQ community to pander to the same fascists he hosted on his podcast, INSTEAD of pandering to the PEOPLE.

As @governor.ca.gov, there is NO ONE @gavinnewsom.bsky.social HASN'T sold out in support of his own personal, political self-interest:

1. He sold out his own climate goals in favor of the fossil fuel industry and the corrupt "public" utilities like PG&E (the second most expensive in the nation).

And his trolling of the GOP on social media is all thanks to Camille Zapata, Newsom’s brilliant digital director.

But behind all his snarky tweets and his macho chest thumping lies a hypocrite and a liar. Behind all the public bravado lies an empty suit whose words are meaningless and hollow.

Gavin Newsom didn't spearhead California's redistricting plan out of some deep-seated love for democracy, but to enhance his image for his presidential run. His loathsome podcast has done nothing more than provide a platform for fascists like Steve Bannon, Michael Savage & the deceased Charlie Kirk.
