When you put it like this, a $75 million bribe to Melania and gutting the Washington Post seems like a small price to pay.

Image showing Mayor Mamdani looking frustrated, with a text overlaid that reads “NYC Public Library Action Network” at the top, and in large bold letters text that reads “Mayor Mamdani did not honor his commitment to allocate 0.5% of the city expense budget to NYC public libraries in his preliminary budget” and then in smaller font below, there is text that reads “visit NYCPLAN.ORG for more information”

While a candidate, @mayor.nyc.gov pledged to commit 0.5% of the city’s budget to public libraries.

Unfortunately, Mayor Mamdani has broken this promise in his preliminary FY27 budget, released yesterday, where he allocated 0.39% to libraries.

This amount is well below the promised 0.5%

Table showing the five richest men in the U.S from Bloombergs billionaire list
., all in technology. Elon Musk tops the list with a net worth of $461B and a year-to-date gain of $28.2B. Larry Ellison is second at $300B with a $107B YTD gain. Jeff Bezos has $268B (+$29.5B YTD), Larry Page $250B (+$81.9B YTD), and Sergey Brin $234B (+$75.5B YTD). Each row also lists last-day change, country (all United States), and industry (all Technology).

Kind of wild that while food assistance was withheld from millions of families, one Trump-supporting billionaire (Ellison) saw his net worth grow more this year than the entire SNAP budget. And the YTD gains of the other four richest men would’ve fully covered salaries for all 2M federal employees.

Of course. We're only supposed to have heat flashes I guess.

Sadly, Sandy Brodello and Noelle Quinn were just fired after bringing their teams to the playoffs (and the Liberty winning the championship last year).

Censorship Is the Authoritarian’s Dream The right to free expression must include the right to say horrible and evil things.

"More professors in the United States have been fired for controversial views in the past week than any other week in all of American history."

When I work with junior faculty writing books — especially Black women — one of their primary concerns is that the book they're writing will be banned. Even if its not an outright ban, they're worried the books won't be assigned in classes for the very reasons being discussed here today.

When Campus Reform and Turning point came after professors and created the professor watchlist, administrators didn't pay attention..Now they are being fired and attacked. Maybe institutions should have done more to protect academic freedom....

If *your department head and your dean* can be removed for supporting your colleague in teaching in their area of expertise, then you have no academic freedom. In a functional sense, you don't work at a university at all.

The weather in NYC is fantastic. If we have to listen to Adams and Cuomo bloviate for the next two months, hopefully we will at least have crisp autumn air.

Starting Your Academic Book? Do This First – Right Prose

I spend most of my day helping academics writie their first book, which means I've seen a lot of different approaches and also developed some principles to make the process as pain-free as possible :). I share what I've found to be most useful in this podcast episode : rightprose.co/podcast/star...

As a former Texas State Rep, let me be clear: LOCKING Rep. Nicole Collier inside the chamber is beyond outrageous.

Forcing elected officials to sign “permission slips” & take police escorts to leave? That’s not procedure. That’s some old Jim Crow playbook.

I had the pleasure of being a beta reader for Laura’s book. It’s an indispensable resource for academics editing their own work or reviewing their peers’ work. Order today so she can increase her donation to the Trevor Project.

All writing you do for your book (or whatever project you're working on) is real writing. Outlines, rough drafts, random bullet points, notes on cocktail napkins, ideas in your notes app. It's all real. There's no fake writing.

I’m not a historian, but I love listening to the Drafting the Past podcast. The host, Kate Carpenter, is an excellent interviewer.

I wonder if there's also something about who believes they have a future in academia (or believes that academia has a future they want to be part of).

That is... well that is interesting (though not sure interesting is the right word here).

Mike Lawler’s district is NOT reliably Republican. It actually went for Kamala Harris in the presidential election. Call him!

Hi, this is Meg Barnette, Brad's wife.

While escorting a defendant out of immigration court at 26 Federal Plaza, Brad was taken by masked agents and detained by ICE.

This is still developing, and our team is monitoring the situation closely.

Just recorded a podcast about…all of this… and what it means for folks writing books. I managed to stay calm because I’m not trying to raise my blood pressure on top of the rest of this bullshit.

You can stop asking where the mass opposition is. It's everywhere. People poured out to protest not only what Trump has done—but what they fear he will do next.

This Is the top story on @motherjones.com, as it should be on every news site. Millions of people turned out to oppose Tump/Musk/facism yesterday. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
