those are NATIONAL CONTESTS where we pit children against each other to see who can spell the most words. I don’t know a single adult who could win a spelling bee. I couldn’t win one!! (what does it have to do with bees? no idea)

I can’t say this enough: fanfiction authors who are writing in english as a second (or third or fourth!!?) language are SO SMART AND IMPRESSIVE. english is HARD. it is hard for native speakers!! I just found out other places don’t have spelling bees?

(also, a lot of these phrases are regional! the US is huge, and there’s also Britain, Ireland, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa… a ton of places that speak different english! I have had to explain “like boiling a frog” to other americans more than once bc it’s… super regional 🤣)
