Beyond Boundaries
Exploring Transnational Ecofeminist Political Theologies and Solidarities in Latin America

This paper centers voices that have not yet been explored in academic debates over political theologies. It does so by relocating the central terms of contestation in ecofeminist ideas of the Americas for the sake of exploring possibilities of building transnational solidarities to propose alternative notions of โ€œthe political.โ€ How can we ground โ€œpolitical theologiesโ€ in feminist, ecological, and Latin American epistemologies? How can Latin American ecofeminist liberation theologies contribute to illuminating and addressing the politics of our time? The first section delves into the different conceptual priorities of ecofeminism and ecofeminist theologies in the context of Latin America to argue that sharp distinctions between these projects should be blurred. The second section challenges the ideas of โ€œFirstโ€ or โ€œThirdโ€ world as proposed by Chandra Talpade Mohanty as potentially causing obstacles to building transnational feminist solidarities in a global context. The third section examines the collective, Con-spirando, in Chile as an exemplar of new possibilities for how reshaping political theology can enrich resistance and solidarity in the religious and spiritual context of Latin America and beyond.

For the final assignment in my "Gender, Religion, & IR" course, students wrote autobiographical essays connecting personal experiences with class themes. Got excellent, thoughtful papers full of creativity and reflection. Amazing what students can write when given a bit of freedom and flexibility.

might resonate with North American and English-speaking audiences. I also saw it as a chance to expand my scholarship into my new research agenda on transnational dimensions in the Americas. I almost gave up on the paper, but @arturochang.bsky.social encouraged me to submit it to the journal (2/3)

My first solo-authored paper in English is FINALLY OUT! ๐Ÿ“š ๐Ÿฅน I began this project in 2019 after taking a seminar on feminist theology in my first year of PhD at Northwestern. It was a great opportunity to deepen my earlier work on ecofeminist theology in LATAM and to explore how these themes (1/3)

Imagining ecopolis:
Visions of ecofeminist political theology and ecocriticism in Latin America
Social Compass, 71(3), 442-464.

Although often overlooked by mainstream accounts of political theology and ecocriticism in the Global North, powerful visions of an ecopolis have been emerging in Latin America. In this article, we review the status of mainstream approaches to notions such as subject, citizen, and personal dignity and put them in a critical dialogue with Latin American Ecofeminist Political Theologies (LAEPT). We argue that those notions, often conceived from a Western and anthropocentric perspective, show their limits when interrogated from the perspective of LAEPT. Accordingly, we suggest that their main contribution lies not only in their critique of the Western paradigm but also in advancing alternative conceptions of an ecologically conscious political community that considers the Earth as sacred, and nature as a reflection of the divine. We conclude that such conceptions can also be seen at work in the rights of nature enshrined in the so-called new Latin American Constitutionalism.
