Insane but true fact: making US roads as safe as Canadian, Australian, or European roads would save more lives than eliminating murder from the US.

Aside from the insanely large parking lot, I would agree.

I get that the news cycle is packed right now, but I just heard from a colleague at the Smithsonian that this is fully a GIANT SQUID BEING EATEN BY A SPERM WHALE and it’s possibly the first ever confirmed video according to a friend at NOAA

Trigger warning.

“In crashes, SUVs are more likely to strike vital organs in the core of adults’ bodies & heads of children. Hitting pedestrians above their center of gravity means they’re more likely to be knocked forward & down and then be driven over.”

Plus more likely to hit in the 1st place.

In the 00's, a car company made this commercial that accidentally exposed how much space is wasted by car-centric road design.

What’s crazy: The most unrealistic part of this video is how it shows *too many people* — because the average car on the road has just 1.5 people in it.

an appropriate response to your product killing a child after months of psychological manipulation and torture is to take the product off the market before it kills again and the fact that this isn’t universally accepted right now is incredibly frightening

Scary discovery by @shawnmicallef.bsky.social: they're using AI to project a grassroots campaign. Anyone with a buck to protect can now shovel it into AI to protect private rents on public resources. bsky.app/profile/shaw...

Severe cuts to the National Weather Service led to the Jackson NWS going without a full-time overnight forecasters.

Warnings for the 3 AM tornado that claimed at least 18 lives were delayed as a result.

Shawn Micallef: Vehicles have become weapons by design — and public space is in their crosshairs A culture like ours weaponizes vehicles — from the way they are designed to the way the roads they run on are designed.

Cars, trucks & SUVs have become driver weapons. Sometimes intentionally, sometimes in the way streets & vehicles are designed. We should admit that we are very much OK w a certain amount of death & life-changing injuries in order to not inconvenience driving. My column this week. Pls read n share.

This black-and-white photo captures soldiers celebrating at Vimy Ridge in 1917. Packed into a military truck, they wear WWI-era uniforms and helmets, with many waving joyfully. The convoy moves along a dirt road, surrounded by a stark, snowy landscape with bare trees, reflecting the harsh wartime environment. Their cheerful expressions suggest a moment of triumph, likely after the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

On this day in 1917, the Battle of Vimy Ridge began.
It is one of the most famous battles in Canadian history, which saw four Canadian divisions fighting together for the first time against three German divisions.
Let's look at some facts of this battle.

A spoof of an infographic showing a map of Europe, colour-coded by which countries will offer food to visitors. The caption is "Will the detective investigating your murder be sad?" The Nordic territories are labelled "sad", Northern Europe is labelled "sad & wet", Eastern Europe, Southern France and Northern Italy are labelled "sad and drunk" and the Mediterranean nations are labelled "sexy". It's less funny when you explain it, to be honest.

Will the detective investigating your murder be sad?

Ridership on Toronto's Bike Share system reaches new heights, with 7 million rides for the year! Up 23% from last year. This is due in part to the expansion of the system, but also additional safe infrastructure. Toronto is a cycling city!

If you bike to work, you live longer, new study confirms If you’re looking for an affordable and accessible way to live longer, skip the pricey wellness retreats and quirky biohacks—just bike to work.

“The long-term health benefits didn’t stop there: commuter cycling was also linked to a 24% reduced risk of cardiovascular hospitalizations, a 51% lower risk of dying from cancer, and improved mental health, as measured by fewer prescriptions for anxiety and depression.” Via @momentummag.bsky.social

Toronto's best hope is that they give the removal work to Metrolinx. It will take 12 years to plan and design, and the cost will grow to $200 million per km and might never be finished.

Premier Ford, the bike counter at Bloor W by Keele, 5:22pm today 871 PEOPLE of all ages had passed riding their bicycles.
As of Jan. 1, it’s been 386,152.
If there were CONNECTIONS N-S to Lake, there would be 2 to 3 times more riders.

Toronto needs more SAFE bikelanes, NOT less.

This is correct. The City of Toronto Act is a provincial statute and the province can change it at their whim. This and the reduction in the number of city councillors during the last election really make the case that Toronto deserves to be a Charter city.

These issues are 100% municipal responsibilities, and the province is damaging Canadian democracy by forcing this issue on us.

Since municipalities in Canada do not have any constitutionally protected separation of powers, however, Doug Ford is able to force his will in place of the municipal government that we elected.

Toronto had an election in 2023. Olivia Chow is the mayor of Toronto, and not Doug Ford. Bike lanes and traffic were central issues in the election, with Olivia (pro-bike lane - won with 37.16%) winning over other candidates such as Mark Saunders (anti-bike lane, lost with 8.59%).

And just to reiterate, every trip that I take by bike is a trip where I am not driving (one less car that you are stuck in traffic behind).
