Street Fighter EX3 (2000 | Arika | PS2) also celebrates it's 25th birthday in Japan today. It's a frankly insane interpretation of Street Fighter with four person battles, a cast of bizarre original characters, and incredible win screens.

Let's stitch together some panning shots from Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket! (and check out the ones @sundownmcmoon.bsky.social has been posting from Zeta Gundam).

This one from episode 6 is probably the most memorable in the whole OVA

Eventually I'm going to be as obsessed with Susumu Hirasawa as I am Ryuichi Sakamoto and Haruomi Hosono. The four P-Model albums I've heard so far are all so weird and cool.

One of the coolest appeals of 3D animation is its ability to evoke the uncanny or liminal. There's something so surreal and dreamlike about older cgi renders.

18.02.2025 20:28 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Kind of limiting to the imagination of what you could achieve with 3D animation that one of the go to examples of a really great looking 3D animated film is that it has a lot of charm of 2D animation.

18.02.2025 20:21 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Call me a hater but my issue with the Spiderverse style is that you spend so much time trying to make 3D animation look like a comic when you could just, draw it? Like ok it's cool that the tech can pull off the look of a comic but the appeal of such a feat borders on tech fetishism.

If you retreat to the familiar constantly and never seek discomfort or challenge not only will you be incredibly dull you'll also deteriorate your brain and become easily persuaded by false narratives. This is why fascist governments have always been against challenging art.

I used to get side eyed for being broadly against the poptimist movement but now everyone is starting to see how much of "poptimism" is just anti-intellectualism. Anti-intellectualism is a cornerstone of fascism. Have idiosyncratic tastes people! Like weird shit!

I genuinely question the humanity of people who are hyped about generative AI "art". Real reptilian psychology. Just so devoid of any soul. Legitimately creeps me out

it's a design mentality that I wish wasn't pretty much removed from mainstream games anyway. think taking moments to slow down and force the player to think adds texture and introspection to more action based titles. In a weird way, I think I miss getting "stuck"

It's interesting how Quake especially, the final test in a game mostly about running fast and shooting a ton, is an obtuse puzzle that involves a mechanic that never even shows up in the single player campaign. Maybe older games could often be ineloquent in the way they conveyed their puzzles but -

24.01.2025 07:14 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Boss fights themselves are also puzzles more than just damage sponges or tests of mechanical dexterity. This was also true of the first Metal Gear Solid, as well as Quake I. Quake had two boss fights, and both were more puzzles than just big guys you shoot a ton.

24.01.2025 07:14 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

It can be frustrating feeling, but there's something to be said about how often older games force you to slow down and think about information being presented to you. Soul Reaver's biggest crime so far is the most puzzle dense levels have the worst music (Soul Reaver generally has a great OST).

24.01.2025 07:14 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

By this metric, Soul Reaver totally fails. Progress grinds to a halt while you struggle to figure out what the fuck you're supposed to do. I don't really know if this objectively a bad thing though.

24.01.2025 07:14 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Soul Reaver, is not a hard game mechanically. Not so far anyway. Combat is pretty easy and a true game over state is pretty hard to achieve. But MAN the puzzles and level design have me going a bit crazy. I think in modern games, there's this idea that constant forward momentum = good game design

24.01.2025 07:14 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Part of that is obviously I'm older now and I've internalized more of the language of video games and have gotten better at them But whenever I play older video games I often get closest to getting "stuck" again. A lot of that has to do with puzzles or obtuse level design.
