Upon further inspection my feed consists primarily of posts from people whom I don't follow. If there is a way to suppress this, I am very interested to know.

However, so far, my feed is filled with posts from people I am not following, and which are primarily political. It's not that I am inclined to disagree with the politics that I'm (so far) encountering, but I was hoping for something like what Instagram was in the before times... Naïve?
