I didn't expect to amidst all the cruelty & horror of the world—underneath its sky of gathering storms—I would suddenly find the kind of life I always wanted, needed, dreamed of. The one that felt impossible only 6 months ago. A life of wonder, curiosity, allure, and sweetness.
The disheartening things are obvious: spending my days doing close readings of murderous policy, knowing the statistics and how they are going to swing, having few solutions.
The heartening thing is how many teachers have been like: they'll have to fire me, I refuse to participate in this shit.
But no matter which direction the conversation goes, it ends in the same place. I say, apologetically, "This legislation is designed in a way that will get kids killed. There's no clever puzzle to solve. You just need to decide whether you are going to risk your job or a student's wellbeing."
