From sixgills to baskings! Our new #maximus_SHARK project is up and running, and we're visiting the Catalan fishing guilds to start a new collaboration with their fishermen. Together, we'll try to broaden the ecological knowledge of this species in the NW Mediterranean. @manelgazo.bsky.social
New maps reveal the scale of #saiga migrations across #Kazakhstan and the threats they face.
They highlight key migration routes and show how roads, railways and infrastructure can fragment habitat and disrupt movements.

The latest #FAO #SoMFi report shows we're steadily getting to an overall more sustainable framework of #resource exploitation. Room for improvement (e.g 28% women workforce, some important fish stocks yet to reach their MSy) but results tell us we're on the right track.
Just an hour ago at the CITES #CoP20 all Mantas and Devil Rays (Mobulidae spp.) were accepted by consensus to uplist from Appendix II to Appendix I!

Historic victory for sharks: #CITESCoP20 Parties voted to list oceanic whitetip sharks on Appendix I, the highest level of protection offered by CITES.
“Today’s decision is a watershed moment for all sharks and rays,” said WCS’s Luke Warwick.

Our new research paper is out. We found microplastic ingestion by the blackmouth catshark (Galeus melastomus) in the canyoned continental margins of the Gulf of Lion was high, more than in other parts of the Mediterranean and was influenced by the role of those canyoned margins. Full thread 👇🏻🦈
Cutting teeth probably let smaller sharks get higher in the food web than those with grasping teeth. Awesome stable isotope study led by fabulous PhD graduate Sabrina Riveron!

The #Bocadolça project has been carried out at the Faculty of Biology from the University of Barcelona, Institut de Recerca de la Biodiversitat (IRBio_UB), and has been supported by the Fundació Zoo de Barcelona and the Barcelona City Council. Illustrated version of the protocol: Vanessa Rovira.
Additionally, we’ve also set up a handling protocol for individuals that are caught by trawl and trammel nets to minimise their at-vessel and post-release mortality. This protocol has been designed in collab with the fishermen and an illustrated version has been created to be used on board. (2/3)
We’ve recently finished our #Bocadolça project, the main aim of which was to determine presence and seasonality of the bluntnose sixgill shark (Hexanchus griseus) in the deep waters off Catalonia (NW Mediterranean). @manelgazo.bsky.social (1/3)

Hey Johann. We’ve talked to the fishermen and we do have a few nore details. Any email address we could reach out to so we can share the info?

Yesterday, an unfortunate 7m-long basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) was caught by trammel nets in Port de la Selva (NE Spain), close to shore. Sightings of this species start to be more frequent along the Catalan Coast at this time of the year, likely driven by ++[phytoplankton] in the region.

So cool! Tagged four sixgills in the Med this year, 3 tags popped up and we got really close to getting one back but it finally drifted too far away…

Though we still need to work on proper reporting of discards, the study concludes sharks and rays represent little to no revenue for Mediterranean fleets.
New research by Colloca et al. found that the average contribution of elasmobranchs to the total annual landings of EU fisheries operating in the Mediterranean Sea from 2013 to 2022 was, in economic value...
0.60%.

To set up a protocol for the release of accidentally captured bluntnose sixgill sharks 🦈…. the key is to listen and learn from the experts.
A huge thank you for your time and knowledge, skippers!

Oh no.
The wave of rising shark & ray extinction risk #GlobalSharkTrends
👉 started in rivers, estuaries, nearshore coastal waters
👉 before rapidly expanding out across the oceans.
Lower risk only in harder-to-fish nearshore habitats, ie,
👉 Kelp/algal reefs
👉 Rocky reefs, &
👉 Deepsea
