We remember and honor the APA members who were among the nearly 3,000 people killed on Sept. 11, 2001: Captain John Ogonowski and First Officer Tom McGuinness crewed Flight 11, and Captain Charles “Chic” Burlingame and First Officer David Charlebois flew Flight 77.

New secondary barriers give added layer of security for airline cockpits Congress in 2018 mandated all new airliners have secondary barriers. After years of delays, that regulation is set to go into effect next year.

APA spokesperson Capt. Dennis Tajer told CBS News that every airliner needs a secondary barrier.

“I was out there flying during 9/11, and I saw all that happened,” he said. “That is my yesterday. We cannot have my yesterday become everyone else’s tomorrow.”

Never again: legislation aims to prevent another midair collision like the one that killed 67 people in January | CNN A bill introduced Tuesday, exactly six-months after the fatal midair collision over the Potomac River, aims to fix aviation safety weaknesses exposed by the tragedy.

Safety of flight will always be APA’s highest priority. We commend Senator Ted Cruz, Secretary Sean Duffy, and Chair Jennifer Homendy for their focus on enhancing the margin of safety in congested airspace.

8.8 magnitude earthquake near Russia prompts tsunami alerts in Hawaii, Alaska and West Coast Tsunami alerts were issued for Alaska and Hawaii on Tuesday after a major, 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia, according to officials.

An earthquake off the coast of Russia has triggered a tsunami warning for Hawaii. Waves are forecast to hit the islands at 1900 HST. The Red Cross recommends being at least 100 feet above sea level if possible.

On this date, our nation observes the official end of slavery. It was on June 19, 1865, that Union troops arrived in Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued it. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021.
