The scapegoating of immigrants has always had the intended effect of pushing communities to castigate & dehumanize specific groups of people. As we reach this fever point of chaos & hate, it seems almost natural that Trump would demonize immigrants to justify policies that persecute them.

Immigrants have faced attacks throughout history. In 1800s, anti-Catholic leaders spread lies that Irish ppl stole Bibles. 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act banned immigration from China until repealed in 1943. Japanese Americans were put in detention facilities at behest of FDR for perceived disloyalty.

The immigration system is a civil, not criminal, legal system — borne out of similarly chilling political circumstances to protect the United States from national-security threats during World War II and terrorism following the 9/11 attacks.

The State Dept. has urged foreign students to self-deport after review of their social-media accounts showed political speech — which the First Am. protects. Customs & Border Control has denied people entry to the US for having content on their phones suggesting disagreement with the admin.
