In 4 years, more than 2.5m homes in Ukraine, 13% of the stock, have been damaged or destroyed, with at least €72bn needed for reconstruction. Will rebuilding it restore the past or lay the foundations for a new housing paradigm? Read 🇺🇦 State of Housing - www.housingeurope.eu/state-of-hou...
Public, cooperative & social housing providers face high costs to build parking spaces that are often under-used as well as rigid parking requirements to prioritise homes over cars. A lot can be done to change this pattern.

With the EU Affordable Housing Plan now on the table, our debate at the European Parliament (2 February) clearly showed that we need to guide Europe home with substance and public purpose to define our common housing response. Read how.

The Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas called on the European Commission and Commissioner Dan Jørgensen to launch a new EU recovery plan dedicated exclusively to housing, warning that cities will be left exposed once the current Resilience and Recovery funding runs out.

For years, student housing was treated as a niche, seasonal issue. So much that without affordable housing, higher education has become exclusionary.
EU’s new Affordable Housing Plan put students at the centre & public housing shows what works. More on it at our EP event, 02/02. tinyurl.com/4p64ws32
In a talk between our Danish member, BL & Commissioner Dan Jørgensen, he noted Copenhagen wasn’t always liveable, but decades of dedicated housing policy show what’s possible.
Time to make “affordable” an adjective, not a noun.
Time to show in 2026 that we learn from history.

Housing Europe sees the EU Affordable Housing Plan as a 1st step to build a framework allowing Europe to join forces. Success will depend on local capacity to meet diverse housing needs, and public, cooperative, and social housing should remain central.

Our Sec-Gen insisted at an event by the @epc-official.bsky.social that Europe must ensure efficiency gains reach households. Private finance has a role, but public interest cannot be sidelined, especially through public-private partnerships that risk favouring private over social outcomes.
More and better decarbonised homes are not a contradiction if policy chooses to treat public, cooperative, and social housing as the backbone of a long-term investment strategy. Read about our Decarbonisation Summit last week.

EU support for housing is a drop in the bucket & debt rules still count public housing as national debt, even as countries face tight fiscal limits. EIB’s plan to double lending is key but depends on Member States matching 50%. Will they step up?

In the Netherlands, housing is the defining issue of today’s elections.
Our State of Housing report clearly says needs will exceed supply by 1M homes by 2031.

Lisbon’s public housing company (and our member) Gebalis turned 30! Managing 27,000 homes across the city, it has quietly transformed lives. In a city gripped by a housing crisis, Gebalis offers stability & hope but the call for more investment, staff & new homes is growing louder.
The European Council is finally putting housing on its agenda, a historic first. However, recognising the crisis is not the same as fixing it. Subsidiarity should not become an excuse for inaction,

We say, but please make it affordable. Join us on November 18 in Prague for #AffordableHousingInitiative Days to see how.

Europe’s next generation is running out of room.
As our Sec-Gen told @artefr.bsky.social, too few public mission banks & limited-profit housing providers mean the market was left to fail on its own. Upcoming public finance should create stability, not speculation.
