Multiscale characterization of Mn-templated protodolomite formed under electrochemical and carboxyl modulation

We have a new preprint, led by @petrash.bsky.social, using wicked electrochemistry and really nifty microscopy to look at how manganese redox cycling and carboxyl groups play into the formation of protodolomite. 🧪⚒️

Fossil fuel lobbyists outnumber all Cop30 delegations except Brazil, report says One in every 25 participants at 2025 UN climate summit is a fossil fuel lobbyist, according to Kick Big Polluters Out

1,600+ fossil fuel lobbyists at COP30, outnumbering every delegation except Brazil

This isn’t ‘dialogue’; it’s the industry responsible for the crisis hijacking the negotiations meant to stop it

If this doesn’t make you furious, you’re not paying attention

Incorrect. The Venezuelan (illegitimate) government is both the cause of migration and the enabler of drug trafficking schemes. Also, the Venezuelan regime is far from "stable"

Projected changes in the annual proportion of the population experiencing power outages per census tract, calculated as the difference in power outage rates between the hindcast period (1995–2014) and the late century period (2071–2100) considering a 3 °C of warming scenario.

Climate modeling suggests that if the Earth warms by 3 °C by the late 21st century, hurricane-induced power outages will increase significantly in northern Florida, Georgia, the mid-Atlantic, and the North Atlantic coast. In PNAS: https://ow.ly/Lu7I50Xgj05

These factors caused transient changes in pore water composition and redox conditions, favoring the precipitation of cements like ferroan dolomite and siderite during the Miocene Climatic Optimum

Episodic carbonate cementation in a Miocene Eger Rift paleolake was driven by a combination of climatic, hydrological, and biogeochemical factors, including increased humidity, weathering, and variable solute fluxes.

Using focused ion beam (FIB) milling and scanning electron microscopy, it is possible to reconstruct the complex internal nano-architecture of electron-conducting carbon-cement. Illustrated here is a magnified view of a single FIB slice highlighting the pores.
CREDIT: James Weaver, Damian Stefaniuk, and Admir Masic.

The buildings of the future might also be giant batteries. Improved electron-conducting carbon concrete can bear weight and store energy. A key to performance is the nanoscale connectivity of the electrode’s conductive carbon network. In PNAS: https://ow.ly/7rZa50XaBiC

Carbon offsets fail to cut global heating due to ‘intractable’ systemic problems, study says Analysis of 25 years of evidence shows most schemes are poor quality and fail to lower emissions

News that shocks no one: Carbon offsets do nothing for climate.

Earth Was a Fungal World Before Plants Existed Fungi arose long before plants, shaping Earth with early soils and nutrient cycles. Their hidden legacy shows they may have prepared the world for life to flourish on land.

We’ve Lived through the Three Hottest Summers on Record Climate-fueled heat has caused thousands of excess deaths over the past three summers, which were the three hottest on record

Congratulations, you've just lived through the three hottest summers on record 🫠

But with greenhouse gas emissions still piling up in the atmosphere, those records probably won't stand for terribly long. 🧪

This is not a new approach; it dates back to psychiatric research conducted in the 1960s, when LSD was investigated for its potential in treating anxiety and end-of-life distress.

Etymology of Earth science words and phrases The origins of words, prefixes, suffixes, abbreviations, names, acronyms, and terms commonly used in Earth sciences.

A post I’ve been putting together for 2 years - the Etymology of Earth Sci Words. So far about 500 terms - the initial goal before clicking the ‘Publish’ tab

www.geological-digressions.com/etymology-of...

There are >1,000,000 words in the English language
So my 500 words is a paltry sample. ⚒️🧪🌊
