Magic seems to have gone from fun to super competitive very fast as a game, and the circle back to play for fun and negotiated mods help new people engage while some long term players get upset at it.

The wild thing to me is that every analog game has house rules and negotiated mods. Historically, we didn't play with such a wide range of people (or discuss games with a community of thousands online), so house rules were barely brought up until someone came in from a new social circle

I was an evangelist for online learning until I took a MOOC. It was a well designed class, but so ial structures don't scale the way economists think, so it did not deliver solid learning. Because all education is social.
