Americans Love Avocados. It’s Killing Mexico’s Forests. (Published 2023)

This story is not new but a presentation at #Botany2025 raised awareness on the impact of avocado production on biodiversity. U.S. demand is driving deforestation in rich Mexican cloud forests which also support monarch butterflies. www.nytimes.com/2023/11/28/u...

Senators Could Vote Imminently to Remove Their Homes, Travel Info From Internet The Senate could vote imminently to allow members of Congress and their staff to demand websites take down info about their houses and travel details.

ICYMI, Sens. @klobuchar.senate.gov and Cruz are trying to sneak a bill through intended to protect congressional security but so poorly drafted it would allow members to remove public info to conceal ethical lapses, restrict accountability, while failing to force data brokers to remove personal info

I'm launching a new research initiative to collect and share anonymous stories of the human toll. And I'd be very grateful for your help.

The First Planned Migration of an Entire Country Is Underway The Pacific island nation of Tuvalu could be submerged in 25 years due to rising sea levels, so a plan is being implemented to relocate its population to Australia.

The first planned migration of an entire country due to climate change is happening! Tuvalu, a Pacific island nation, is at risk of being submerged under rising sea level, so it has signed an agreement with Australia to allow 280 Tuvaluans to settle in Australia as permanent residents each year.

The result will be chaos for this Nation’s public schools.
Requiring schools to provide advance notice and the chance
to opt out of every lesson plan or story time that might implicate a parent’s religious beliefs will impose impossible
administrative burdens on schools. The harm will not be
borne by educators alone: Children will suffer too. Classroom disruptions and absences may well inflict long-lasting
harm on students’ learning and development.
Worse yet, the majority closes its eyes to the inevitable
chilling effects of its ruling. Many school districts, and particularly the most resource strapped, cannot afford to engage in costly litigation over opt-out rights or to divert resources to tracking and managing student absences.
Schools may instead censor their curricula, stripping material that risks generating religious objections. The Court’s
ruling, in effect, thus hands a subset of parents the right to
veto curricular choices long left to locally elected school
boards. Because I cannot countenance the Court’s contortion of our precedent and the untold harms that will follow,
I dissent.

Sotomayor, in dissent, correctly says that today's decision in Mahmoud will lead public schools to simply censor books featuring LGBTQ characters and themes, creating "chaos" and stigmatizing children with LGBTQ families. This decision will lead to book bans.

He forgot to put the vehicle in park, causing it to roll down the street damaging other cars. He jumped in the vehicle (which had no platess) and drove off without identifying himself.
