I disagree. The fandoms that tend to be the most self destructive are ones that try to push out any criticism. Sometimes things are flawed and that’s fine.

I actually do agree that some fandoms can be so negative it can transform into something toxic (or even dangerous) but my issue is that example 2 of a person is not that big of a deal. There’s a difference between “guy who’s annoyed with a franchise but keeps to themselves” and “full on harasser”

Both types of these people can be pretty insufferable. But my point is that fan 2 is not some miserable tar pit, sometimes people like to critique things heavily while still engaging with a work. If they’re not going out of their way to bother people, then who… cares?

I would usually agree but if someone is willing to break down their issues with a game to the point of thinking of ways on improving it, that does sound like they are genuinely trying to analyze a work of media

Pretty much. I think people really need to feel comfortable with dealing with fans they don’t agree with but are ultimately harmless. It’s why a lot of fanbase that are super anti criticism ultimately self implode, because they just start eating their own.

It’s not “abnormal”. People will complain nonstop about things they enjoy. It becomes an issue when that toxicity extends to harassment towards fans. But judging by the image it’s literally just a guy minding their own business lmao

Yeah that’s the funny part. They seem to think people who are very critical of the thing they like are miserable, but a lot of these people are a lot happier because they don’t have to pretend the thing they like is flawless. Like oh no, they keep their rants to private servers. The horror.

I’ve noticed that. I stopped expressing some of my opinions on shows I watched on Twitter because no matter How many times you emphasize “I like this thing but I wish this could be better” you will be ripped to shreds and called some kind of bigot. Media discussion is so unbearable nowadays.

Like for me personally I’d rather have someone dislike the same thing I like but enjoy certain aspects. Rather than someone who is basically bullied out of the community because people think they can control how you feel about a piece of media.

Also from personal experience I’ve had way more unpleasant interactions with Thing #1 type of fan than #2. People who develop parasocial relationships with creators tend to be very… unhinged.

The second one is pretty normal for fans and I don’t know why people treat it like this bizarre, confusing scenario.

Sometimes you can enjoy a piece of media and fall out of love with it. Sometimes you dislike a piece of media but like aspects of it.

This is completely normal.
