"Not everyone wants their story to be open.”
This gentle reminder emerged from one of our collective intelligence zine-making workshops.
In health research, we often strive for openness, open data, open access, open science. But true openness must also include space for boundaries, privacy, and consent.
For many, especially those whose lived experience is part of the research, sharing their story publicly isn’t always comfortable or safe.
So how do we navigate this tension? How do we honour the drive for transparency while holding space for protection, confidentiality, and choice?
We’ve been reflecting on this as we create a roadmap to open research in Ireland, a roadmap that centres care, co-creation, and respect. There’s no simple answer, just a call for greater care, humility, and co-creation.
💬 We’d love to hear how others are holding this balance in your work.

"Open?"
One participant in our open research session captured a powerful paradox: a garden gate, closed, with the word “Open?” above it.
Openness doesn’t mean no boundaries — it means being intentional about where and why we set them.
Whether it’s protecting participant privacy, safeguarding sensitive data, or maintaining research integrity, knowing when to close the gate can be just as important as knowing when to open it.
🌱 So we ask:
Where do you see boundaries fitting into open research?

Being 'openly' transparent might satisfy initial expectations, but without being 'fully' transparent, it can leave gaps that erode trust over time. Thanks for pointing that out, it's a nuanced and important conversation

Absolutely, you're so right to highlight the distinction. Trust can exist without full transparency, but the depth and resilience of that trust often depend on how transparent the engagement is, especially in public or community contexts.

“Open doesn’t mean everyone sees everything; it means those who need to can.”
A zine line from one of our participants at Workshop 3 that's still resonating.
Openness ≠ exposure. It’s meaningful, intentional access.
Where do you draw the line?

"Trust and transparency are not the same thing."
Someone wrote this powerful line in our recent workshop in their zine and it lit a spark.
It led us to ask:
Does simply sharing data build trust? Or do care, context, and relationships matter more?
In research, especially in collaborative and participatory contexts, transparency can feel like a checkbox, upload the data, publish the methods, tick the box. But trust is something deeper. It’s earned over time through care, attentiveness, listening, and reciprocal relationships.
We’re curious to hear from others:
How do you build trust in your research?
What does it take, beyond transparency, to create genuine connection and accountability with collaborators, participants, and the public?
Let’s start a conversation.

The Power of Imagining Together
What would it look like if public engagement in research was so embedded, no one even called it “engagement” anymore?
At our third collective intelligence ENGAGED workshop, we did something playful. We asked participants to imagine an entire town built around open research and meaningful dialogue with the public. A place where the systems, supports, and everyday practices made it natural, not exceptional, to include the public in research.
They were given €3,000 (imaginary!) to invest in what they wanted to see built or transformed. The answers were revealing.
Not headline-grabbing gestures. Not big-budget launches.
But meaningful, practical shifts like:
– Streamlining admin so engagement isn’t a burden
– Recognising and rewarding time spent building partnerships
– Involving the public from the very beginning of research planning
In other words: change doesn't always need fireworks. Sometimes, it’s the small, structural shifts that carry the biggest potential for long-term transformation.
And when we imagine together, new possibilities become just a little more real.

How We Strengthen the Foundations of Open Research
At our third collective intelligence workshop, we didn’t just talk about systems; we mapped them.
What supports are in place for open research? What’s missing? What matters most?
Participants named institutions, policies, and pathways, then imagined what’s possible with better support and bolder connection.
Because real infrastructure isn’t just physical.
It’s cultural. It’s relational. It’s built on trust, funding, and shared purpose.
We’re not just identifying gaps.
We’re creating a blueprint for change, together.
This is how we strengthen the foundations of open research.

Why Open Research Matters
Imagine a world where cutting-edge research, from health breakthroughs to climate science is freely available to inform better policies and spark innovation. That’s the world open research helps us build.
Open research isn’t just about access—it’s about collaboration, transparency, and trust. It allows ideas to travel faster, insights to go deeper, and societal challenges to be tackled together. But achieving this future requires more than good intentions. It needs real support: robust infrastructure, ethical data handling, and systems that empower researchers to share their work meaningfully.
That’s where ENGAGED comes in.
Through this national initiative, we’re co-creating Ireland’s roadmap for public engagement in open research. We're addressing the tough questions, data protection, inclusivity, under-representation, and more, so that openness in research works for everyone.
Let’s make open research not just possible, but powerful.
