Infants rely on herd immunity so they don’t *die* of pertussis. Vaccination will protect them when they’re old enough to be vaccinated but the youngest babies need *everyone* around them to be vaccinated. So get those tetanus boosters everyone, b/c pertussis vaccine is included 👏🏼 #BOGO

‘A place of joy’: why scientists are joining the rush to Bluesky
Researchers say the social-media platform — an alternative to X — offers more control over the content they see and the people they engage with.: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-03784-6
There are already many articles for which there is more attention on Bluesky than on other comparable micro-blogging sites, meaning the academic community and the general public have clearly adopted Bluesky as one of its core places to disseminate and discuss new research.

Large language models prove helpful in peer-review process
In an era plagued by malevolent sources flooding the internet with misrepresentations, distortions, manipulated imagery and flat-out lies, it should come as some comfort that in at least one arena the...
🧪 Stanford researchers found that large language models (LLMs) matched human peer-review points by 31%-39%. For weaker papers, this rose to 44%. Authors found LLM feedback useful in over half of the cases. However, LLMs can't replace humans due to their lack of detailed critiques. #AcademicSky #ml

Linguists Hear an Accent Begin
Residents of an overwintering station in Antarctica provided linguists with evidence of the first small changes in speech that may signal the development of a new accent.
Antarctic scientists showed tiny, early signs of a new accent after spending all winter in isolated groups talking to each other. Cool to see exactly how the process of language divergence starts #langsky

Many people assume being sliced in half by an elevator is the same no matter the orientation, but it actually makes a big difference if the plane of dissection is transverse, sagittal, or coronal. This is why you should consult with experts prior to pursuing an elevator-assisted dissection.
