Spotted Gar for #25DaysOfFishmas???!!! #GarWeek

I visited southern Indiana to fish for spotted gar. They were uncharacteristically very skittish, but I finally landed one.

Later I learned why. Even though it was a county park, there was extensive bowfishing pressure, with people regularly slinging arrows at the gar...

Fun Fact: the two gar species seen in this awesome photoGARph (Longnose & Alligator Gars) can hybridize AND produce fertile offspring 😮

The genera of these two species separated over 100 million years ago! That’s a LONG time to be separated and STILL compatible! #GarWeek

My 1st gar, a shortnose gar caught near my home at the time in Kansas. I lived in Kansas a year, then moved to Idaho. But my fascination with gars remained.

I caught my 1st gar, a shortnose gar, in 2001 while fishing near in Kansas. I couldn't figure out why other anglers didn't respect this fish.

Now there's such a great community of researchers, anglers & conservationists advocating for gar. Follow #GarWeek to learn more.

Generally speaking, overfishing is *by far* the number one threat to sharks, and climate change isn't that big a threat to most species because they can just move.

We're starting to see that happen, as warming waters make new habitats suitable for shark species. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
