I am 14 summers old and I felt humiliation for the first time today. Papa said something this morning about Lord Gaius again. I don't remember what. I thought something gross about him and Lord Gaius. And then the words came tumbling out faster than I could catch them. Do you wish you were one of Lord Gaius' whores, Papa? So you could stroke his huge 'ego'--? He struck me so quickly I didn't even realize I was already on the floor. And then he dragged me by the arm and threw me outside in front of the house. Mama just watched quietly. He told me to strip all of my clothes off or he would throw me into the sea next. He knows I can't swim.

I obeyed. And then he dragged me through the streets to the fountain and placed me on the rim while everybody watched. He yelled Salute! and I saluted. If he told me to die I would've done that too. And he saluted too and we stayed there for an eternity. I didn't dare move a muscle. My bones felt like stone. They could've erected me as another fountain statue. All his comrades came and went, gawking at my body with their slimy faces. Laughing and smiling creepily. They said my body is "perverted" for my age. Papa didn't care. He just looked straight ahead. Papa doesn't care about me at all, he only cares about Lord Gaius. I held back the tears in my eyes the whole time. A statue can't cry anyway.

When my feet had turned a dark purple color and I had pissed all over myself only then did Papa finish his salute. I collapsed on the ground next to him and he just watched. Mama was crying from a distance. Not because she was upset for me, but because her daughter was disloyal to the empire. Lord Gaius did so much for us. Lord Gaius gave us such fruitful lives! He doesn't see race, he views us as equals! That's what Mama and Papa say. I don't care what they say. I DON'T CARE! Lord Gaius took Mama and Papa. Lord Gaius took them from me. He stole them. I wish Lord Gaius was dead.
