Hello, brother.
               Welcome to your final chance
                              to forgo evil.
                              See here, see how
                              your fear
                                                (fermented into hatred)
                              is unfounded.
 Those whom you have come to kill
           are all familiar:     grandmas, granddads,
                                              wives and husbands,
                                              sons and daughters —
                        families like yours.

 But if you can’t put down your gun
                 and join with us in peace,
                                   here is my body as a shield;
          it has five places ready to receive your wrath:
                                              the declaration of my faith;
                                              my prayers;
                                              my charitable gifts;
                                              my fast from dawn to setting sun;
                                              my journey as a pilgrim.

To Our Land

By Mahmoud Darwish
Translated By Fady Joudah
To our land,
and it is the one near the word of god,
a ceiling of clouds
To our land,
and it is the one far from the adjectives of nouns,
the map of absence
To our land,
and it is the one tiny as a sesame seed,
a heavenly horizon ... and a hidden chasm
To our land,
and it is the one poor as a grouse’s wings,
holy books ... and an identity wound
To our land,
and it is the one surrounded with torn hills,
the ambush of a new past
To our land, and it is a prize of war,
the freedom to die from longing and burning
and our land, in its bloodied night,
is a jewel that glimmers for the far upon the far
and illuminates what’s outside it ...
As for us, inside,
we suffocate more!

A poem by Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish, ho yesterday would have celebrated his 85th birthday.

Telling me you’re of a certain age group without telling me your age group.
Which I also just did.

SNOWDROPS

Do you know what I was, how I lived? You know
what despair is; then
winter should have meaning for you.

I did not expect to survive,
earth suppressing me. I didn't expect
to waken again, to feel
in damp earth my body
able to respond again, remembering
after so long how to open again in the cold light
of earliest spring—

afraid, yes, but among you again
crying yes risk joy

in the raw wind of the new world.

after so long how to open again in the cold light
of earliest spring—

“Labour MPs have said for weeks that the outcome they most feared at the Gorton and Denton byelection was a Green partyvictory.”
Kiran Stacey in The Guardian this morning.
Tells you everything that’s wrong with the Labour Party right now in one go.

Son of immigrant parents.
I wonder what his mum and dad think.
What on earth happens to a person like this to pal up with racists?
Does he actually believe they don’t hate him too?
Something so broken in a man like this.

Great post. I just love your photos of the beautiful Glaswegian architecture combined with the history. A very sad story in this case. Thank you for your time and effort.
