When you install the app it generates an account for you. You add your e-voucher code, then you can log in to up to 5 devices with the same account. None of the devices are dependent on any of the other devices being turned on. So yes, you can connect on your phone without having it installed on PC!

You can buy a VPN through subscription with a credit card, you can buy an e-voucher for a subscription on Amazon (for a little more anonymity which is what I do), or you can use a free one like Proton!

Any web request you make while connected will be sent to the server in the country selected, and that server will make the web requests on your behalf from their own IP address, encrypting your web requests in transit. You won't notice any difference in your browsing!

Generally the way you access the VPN is to install the provider's app on your phone and/or computer and hey presto - it will just run in the background.

Free providers are suspicious because they probably do sell your data.

Proton VPN is also a VPN with a really good reputation, and they do offer a free version that isn't suspicious - although you get less features, less choice about where your servers are based, and slower speeds.

I've used this one for a number of years because the provider has a good reputation for deleting your data ASAP & not selling it to companies/giving it to governments. IT security nerds love it. It uses a scratch card code so it's not linked to your banking details.
