About 80% of Law360 Union members signed the demand letter, which was addressed to RELX CEO Erik Engstrom, CFO Nick Luff and the Board of Directors. Law360 Union, a bargaining unit of the NewsGuild of New York, represents about 260 journalists and editorial staff at legal news organization Law360 and regulation news websites MLex US and FTCWatch. In 2021, RELX subsidiary LexisNexis Risk Solutions entered into a $22.1 million contract with the U.S.

Department of Homeland Security to provide ICE with a database of public records to investigate "persons of interest." On Friday, the company extended that contract through the end of May. Union members who signed the demand letter said now is the time for corporate leadership to think twice about working with ICE. "Given ICE's record, it is clear RELX is doing business with an organization that regularly flouts the 'rule of law' principles the company says it upholds," the letter said. In the letter, union members issue a number of demands, including that executives be transparent about the status of RELX's contract, withdraw from the contract if it has been renewed, and hold a town hall with employees where RELX decision-makers answer questions about the contract. "As a workforce of people from diverse backgrounds, we are concerned our employer's parent company may be aiding threats to our safety, both on the job as journalists and as members of the public, since ICE now has latitude

to target people for arrest based on criteria including real or perceived ethnicity or speaking a language other than English," the letter said.

What does the Liberal review say about the community independents? Bill Browne Director, Democracy & Accountability Program The Liberal review of the last election talks almost as much about the "Teal" community independents as it does the Labor Government - there are 52 mentions of "Teal" to 77 mentions of "Labor" or "ALP". For reference, the Liberals lost 16 seats to Labor and 1 to a community independent (and they won another back, for no net change). The report celebrates Tim Wilson's successful (but expensive) strategy to win Goldstein back from community independent Zoe Daniel. He ran a very localised campaign, spent three years campaigning, and ran the campaign in two stages: breaking the electorate's relationship with the incumbent, and then persuading people to vote Liberal. One reason the Liberals found community independents so hard to defeat is that the community independents "spoke a great deal about kindness". By contrast, the Liberal Party's digital advertising spend was

$3 on negative ads for every $1 spent on positive ads, and some thought even that was too little negative advertising. Another strength of the community independents was the local nature of their campaigns. The community independents employed people to translate campaign materials into other languages. They varied their signage. Meanwhile, unsuccessful Liberal candidate Amelia Hamer was banned from doing anything as outré as adding a page for young people to her website. The report describes the community independents as having "huge budgets", but the evidence is limited to the fact that some had "paid campaign managers" (the political parties do too, of course) and that they hired people to hold signs and paid people to translate ads from English to Chinese. This from the Liberals, who spent $1 million in just two months on ads "telling the Peter Dutton story". You do have to admire the report authors for their rosy outlook on life. They write: "Overall, the Teals have one fewer

member in the House of Representatives, an encouraging result for the Party." To be clear, the community independents are down a seat because it was abolished in a redistribution (there were too many seats in that part of Sydney as populations changed). The Liberal Party had nothing to do with it and there's no reason to think it'll happen again. How encouraging.

But don't expect the U.S. Embassy to help. That's according to Mike Huckabee, the U.S. ambassador to Israel. In a lengthy post on X Tuesday, Huckabee said the U.S. embassy is directing all U.S. government employees and their family members in Israel to shelter in place “until further notice" as Iran fires missiles into the country. "The U.S. Embassy is not in a position at this time to evacuate or directly assist Americans in departing Israel," he wrote, adding information about bus service as a courtesy "as you make your own security plans." The Israeli Ministry of Tourism, he said, began running shuttles to the Taba Border Crossing with Egypt and requires prospective passengers to register via the ministry's evacuation form. OPINION | IndyStar. I know there are folks reading this who honestly believe tariffs will help the economy, and that just a bit more patience will reveal them to be the masterstroke of public policy their architects promised. I fully appreciate that understanding these types of issues takes a lot of specialized education and experience. So does plumbing a home.
