this is I think enhanced with how The Origin presents his early life that really feeds into the baggage he has wrt Amuro and The Lalah Thing (which he tries to get over in Z but lapses back once he knows Amuro is back in space) and not really wanting to play the role of the leader in Zeta and CCA

imo through the events of ZZ it manages to coalesce into a decent enough arc of Char being a guy who sees everything he worked for go to shit again, and lashes out in the most petty way driven by frustration/burnout and a lot of unresolved personal issues
