I share about walking, biking, great cities, & progressive politics. I work for @streetsalliance.bsky.social (Seattle's walking, biking, and streets for people nonprofit), but these are my personal opinions.

"We started a war of aggression for no reason & commenced it by accidentally bombing an elementary school & killing over 100 kids."

That simple fact is so horrific that it's just kind of bouncing on the surface of our collective consciousness. We can't absorb its full implications & significance.

(I'd tag @seattleutilities.bsky.social since it looks like it's their work, but they don't see to be monitoring that account)

Survey: Most Americans Are Open To Ditching Their Cars — Streetsblog USA Automakers have spent a century and countless trillions of dollars making car-dependent living the American norm. But U.S. resident still aren't sold, a new survey suggests.

And also, the automobile industry spends $14 billion per year marketing their products and way of living! Advertising exists to change preferences — that has to be swaying a lot of folks.

Meanwhile, walkable cities have an advertising budget of $0, but many Americans still yearn for them.

The more of *these* you have where you live, the less you have to worry about the impact the warmongers are having on the global fossil-fuel supply.

Sustainability is resilience.

Hudson Street storefront vacancies plunge following $13M streetscape revamp Last year, the neighborhood’s storefront vacancy rate dropped to 17.2%, down nearly 10% from the 26.9% it was at a decade ago.

Bike lanes and public seating are good for business! It's common sense: when you create streets that are calm and welcoming, people like to spend time there.

There isn’t a perfect control to say that for sure. But what can be said is that a (bare bones, no additional advertising, no additional activation, poorly signed) pedestrianization pilot hasn’t stifled business as some had feared. I’d be happy to connect with the businesses if you can make an intro

Agreed. Too many basic local gov expenses are levies, leaving general fund for everything that isn't charismatic enough to win at the ballot. We've got to fix this.

Yes, 12th Ave is a great example. @centralseattlestreetsforall.org has an active campaign to upgrade that bike lane that could use your help if you aren't already involved www.streetsalliance.org/get-involved...

In case you are wondering why some bike lanes get called “door zone bike lanes,” this is why. If a person driving opens their door at the wrong moment a person biking will crash into the door/driver. Especially problematic on hills.

We need to upgrade these outdated bike lanes to a safer design.

The US Is Counting Traffic Deaths Wrong By emphasizing the number of people killed per mile rather than deaths per capita, traffic safety groups risk normalizing the factors that make American roads so deadly.

Americans drive a lot more than people in other rich countries.

If we didn’t drive so much, we wouldn’t die in so many crashes.

It’s a simple point, but one that NHTSA, traffic engineers, and many road safety org’s have yet to learn.

Bus bulbs (the last picture) also make the bus much faster as it doesn’t have to merge back into traffic after pulling over to the curb

this is definitely true. It's being driven by the higher utilization rate of stand up scooters, which is interesting because the bikes are safer and more useful, but the scooters have a lower perceived barrier to use

NEW: The Pike Place PDA reports foot traffic was up 5.4% in 2025 (first year of the pedestrianization pilot) over 2024, 8.5% over 2023.🚶🏼‍♀️📈

They say 2025 was "the strongest year ever for percent rent" (a sales metric based on their tenants income). Overall they were $4.7 million in the black.💲📈

It's too bad the term "micromobility" is terrible, because "micromobility lane" would be a more accurate description these days

Given how popular Lime is downtown, I'm not terribly surprised, but it's still wild to see that in 2025 there were more people using scooters than bikes on the 2nd Ave protected bike lane! @seattledot.bsky.social data: sdot.eco-counter.us?siteId=10003...

How Your Parents Ruined Driving YouTube video by Climate Town

The "light truck loophole" is killing Americans at an alarming rate:

"American is #1 in the developed world at dying in car crashes."

"A pedestrian struck by an SUV or truck is 41% more likely to die than a pedestrian struck by a sedan"

Great (and surprisingly funny) @climatetown.bsky.social 📹
