The American Library Association strongly denounces new federal book banning legislation proposed in Congress. Call your Reps. Tell them to oppose H.R. 7661. Capitol switchboard: 202-224-3121 American Library Association, Show Up For Our Libraries
"Parents, not politicians, should guide their childrenβs reading. In our school, campus, and public libraries, materials are selected by trained literacy professionals who understand child development and community needs. Their work is grounded in one clear purpose: helping young people become lifelong readers. H.R. 7661 isnβt fundamentally about protecting kids. Itβs about giving politicians broad authority to restrict whose stories are allowed on the shelves. That should concern anyone who believes in the freedom to read and the right of families to make decisions for themselves.β - ALA President Sam Helmick
"Rather than targeting librarians and teachers, Congress should invest in them. The Right to Read Act offers a better path, supporting well-staffed and well-resourced school libraries, strengthening evidence-based literacy instruction, and protecting the dedicated professionals who help young people discover books that open doors and expand horizons. When we trust families, support educators, and protect the freedom to read, our young people thrive.β - ALA President Sam Helmick.

I get really irritated with Congressmen who just sit and vote with the party line. We need term limits, because I need ACTION behind some of these bills.

π¨NATIONWIDE BOOK BAN ALERT
Whenever the administration takes a loss (like in the supreme court for tariffs) they go for low hanging fruit and book banning is a favorite.
Call and Email your Congressman to keep their hands off school and library funding.

"Wyoming legislators have on their docket this session a bill that would effectively dismantle YA sections in public libraries. It follows the same patterns seen in South Carolina."
Y'all focus too much on the presidency & let local elections go to pot.

How is it that in 2026, the Black church, which has a history of fighting for equality and social justice since enslavement to Civil Rights, now calling for Black people to denounce their Blackness in favor of their Christian-ness (as if the two could be separated)?

Racial slurs are pre-cursors to violence. Full stop.
They aren't just rude asides.
The use of racial slurs should ALWAYS come with consequences.
If you believe that you would have to punish too many people then..
a) I question who you're around
b) you only believe punishment is for certain people

I am a mood reader & a slower reader, but I do read. My read for BHM was a piece of Black literature that I hadn't gotten around to.
With a few changes this book could be about today & its SCARY. Class, Race, Gender are all mixed in 1946 Harlem. Compare to NATIVE SON
