It's a very pretty world to get lost in, but it's NOT a casual, pick-up-and-play game. Spend 5 minutes with it at a time and you won't enjoy it at all. Devote 2 hours to it a session and you'll get the proper experience.
They must have only recently started converting new uploads to webp, so older content remain a friendly format.
You can easily read up on the disadvantages of the format, but, in general anything "developed by Google" is something you want to stay as far away from as possible.
