As political scholars argue in The Harvard Crimson: β€œNot only is silence in the face of mounting authoritarianism morally objectionable, but, as the Columbia case suggests, it’s not working. Its leadership made repeated concessions to right-wing critics, only to be the first to come under attack.”

Microsoft's own research confirms something that was already pretty obvious: relying on a text generating machine to come up with answers erodes critical thinking, and is a method favoured by those who never liked doing critical thinking in the first place

Direct Economic Contributions NIH directly supports the economy through investments in research institutions and job formation.

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings.

But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.

I'd argue that it depends, in part, on whether one is making a good faith effort to understand the consequences of their actions. If they aren't, then they can be held responsible.

There are currently only 22 films streaming on Netflix made before 1980 and not a single one made before 1960, with the oldest film on the platform currently being PSYCHO. I know I’m a broken record but: buy physical media, support your local library, etc etc

When facing the "All we need is STEM!" approach to education, my usual response is: Developing the vaccine was the STEM problem; distribution & getting shots in arms was the Social Science problem; getting people to trust it & combatting misinformation was the Humanities problem-- which did we fail?

What Socrates Can Teach Us About the Folly of AI What Socrates Can Teach Us About the Folly of AI

Happy to share my first piece in TIME! It's about Socrates, #LLMs, and #democracy. #AIEthics #author "If Socrates was the wisest person in Ancient Greece, then large language models must be the most foolish systems in the modern world." https://time.com/6299631/what-socrates-can-teach-us-about-ai/

Well maybe there is some practical value to teaching logic after all (if only to stop people from making this idiotic argument)
