Welcome to my home state
Ohio is often the butt of many jokes in TV and movies, but there are so many treasures in this state.
Related: I think I have a little sunburn on my scalp because that is the most sun I have seen in perhaps a year
And not a single person complained about the year-round Halloween decorations in my yard, including the giant skeleton dressed as a lich king
And that feels like a win, strangely
Happy heritage day (a few days early) to all my fellow Irish Americans, however you may celebrate ☘️ 🇮🇪
But today saw me standing awkwardly in our cul-de-sac, holding a book on Irish heritage to gift to their eldest son while a bag piper hilariously played “Scotland the Brave” and the kid with down syndrome who lives up the street danced an authentic Irish jig in the driveway with his whole heart
I’ve never gotten over that and after some very unpleasant experiences (and physical assaults) in the early 90s, I have just defaulted to avoiding people
To the point where it feels like a trick when normal people are pleasant around me (outside of folks who recognized me from my books or TV)
I am very awkward around families with children because I came of age during a time when I was told repeatedly by people in person and the media in general that my very existence as a visibly queer person was an affront to children and dangerous for them to be around
When I first moved here, what I did not know is my suite mate from college lived just a few doors down with her husband - and, eventually, their kids
I watched the kids grow up through the windows here as I wrote & gamed & introverted, as I do
Everybody was wearing green. Except for me, actually of Irish heritage (Mahoney), but I’m a Goth. Everything is black.
No one seemed to mind
In an unexpected twist, our neighbor up the street hired a bagpiper for their St. Patrick’s Day party ☘️
Most of the neighborhood turned out, which was the first time I met most of these people
I have lived here over 20 years, but I am the weird hermit in the weird house at the end of the lane
