Well, there's this code here: github.com/jazware/bsky...

Though it's not clear to me if this is called repeatedly or not.

mau vs. total users · Issue #2 · ricci/distributed-social-networks looks like the numbers for fedi are MAU (biggest: 277,461, mastodon.social mau on fedilist: 269004) but the numbers for bsky are total users https://github.com/bluesky-social/atproto/blob/d54d278ab...

Yes, this appears to be what jaz's counts do: github.com/ricci/distri...

Who Moderates My Posts and Timeline? A tool giving Mastodon users visibility into how federated moderation applies to them

I made a tool that helps you quantify how much of your personal social network on Mastodon is moderated by which servers: moderation-explorer.online

Are We Decentralized Yet? A site with statistics regarding how concentrated user data is on various web services

Yeah the regular relays return basically the same counts (hence the counts on arewedecentralizedyet.online)

Wow this past week is by far the biggest jump in the Shannon Index (measure of how spread out users are across PDSes) for the atproto world since I started tracking, right on

Additionally, the bigger the "space" the more messy and flawed it is guaranteed to become.

This is why I prefer relatively small, 'hosted' communities, that interact with one another

ICYMI: arewedecentralizedyet.online now has some features that show trends over time so you can watch user data get spread out more, whether you like waffles or not, and as the atproto ecosystem grows

Web trackers are *everywhere*! There are trackers embedded, to some degree or another, in most of the websites people visit.

But where, actually *are* they? As in, where are they hosted?

If you're in the USA or the EU, this is pretty well-studied. In the US […]

Now to figure out some reason to run it.

I'll be updating https://jaz.co.uk/projects/orgs-using-ap/ - which is a database of companies and organisation self-hosting (as in, on their own domain) an ActivityPub service of any kind.

if you know of any, please let me know.

This is why I care about putting numbers into these conversations, so many of them repeat dogma endlessly, we need to actually know where we're at if we want to be able to tell if we're getting where we want to be

I think that for things to get spread out more it's going to take the rise of services that have their own distinct identity and are able to pull people based on their own 'brand'

Yep, this is exactly the tradeoff. The theory is that ability to move data will result in an ecosystem where platforms have incentive not to piss off their users. Clearly, that is not the state of practice right now. Will it be in the future? I think it's worth rooting for a world where it is

... moderation to occur. AppView is the place where it's more feasible to hide posts and block accounts after-the-fact. So yes, there need to be more of these if there is going to be less power concentrated in Bluesky. And there are signs that could in fact come to pass.

26.09.2025 04:23 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

If your posts are not on Bluesky's PDSe then at least they cannot delete them. That's something. I could be wrong on this, but I think the bigger point of control is the AppView rather than the relay - generally speaking, stuff flows through the relay quickly, so it's not much of a place for ...

... combined. I run a site to track data like this, and what I saw was that a few weeks ago, there was enough growth on third party PDSes that it was starting to trend towards more spread out, but in the last week that's reversed. All of the development that's going on right now certainly *could* ..

26.09.2025 04:15 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 2    📌 0

I think the main thing that needs to happen in terms of spreading out user data is that we need to see some alternatives pick up enough steam that they add users at a rate equal to or faster than bluesky itself - right now bluesky PDSes are still adding users much faster than all of the others ...
