The twisting/spin is the actual problem. Right-wing propaganda has emptied the nation’s words and values, and employed them to tear down everything we always stood for. Remaining ethical and retaining our meaning is not the problem, it’s the resistance to the problem!

Empathy is not weakness, and goodness is not empty passivity. This is a twisting, and it is, itself, empty rhetoric, especially if you don’t provide evidence that anyone’s ethics or goodness are the problem.

Absolution? Since when?

Which goodness is empty?

The kind of people who call empathy a sin say things like this.

Even then, responding to injustice with injustice is not the way. I don't even want to joke about it, because that normalizes violence. Let's practice the just world we want, and show everyone that it works.

Secret police throwing anyone who looks Latino in unmarked vans.
National guard and marines deployed in LA.
No end to the wars in Gaza or Ukraine

This is the worst first six months of any presidential term in my lifetime.

What excuses? I just pointed out that we should hold onto our ethics and our neighbors/family's humanity, even/especially in the face of times like these.

Body shaming isn't cool, even when doing it to "the other team" (and we shouldn't be thinking in team sports politics, anyway).

Let's word it more like "that man's position is dangerous when it is filled by someone using irresponsible rhetoric, like this." Let's not paint a target on a person, either.

I know it gets difficult to control our anger at times, in these times, especially. But let's watch out for doing the thing we're objecting to.

Let's not take their irresponsible rhetoric and just aim it back at them. We object to it because it's inappropriate, so we can't turn around and do it, too.

These are our neighbors and family. Trump is harming them, even if they're signing up for it, unwittingly.

No, we don't want to solve our problems with death. We're not the right.

No one should be. We do actually believe in due process and no cruel and unusual punishment. They aren't just platitudes.

If only they worked for us. The Princeton study showed us that's not the case.

We don't actually want anyone to be put there. It's not about the deservingness of any prisoners in question, it's about the ethics of gulag and suspending due process of law. It's about OUR humanity and morals if we allow that.

The irony of a felon who used the courts relentlessly to keep himself out of jail & dispensing of due process for others will probably not be lost on historians.

Maybe I meant I can appreciate that they are fallible humans like we all are (I've been misguided before), and that they're neighbors I need to coexist with [unless they need to be (humanely) sequestered for everyone's safety...], even though their misguidedness is a problem and needs addressing.

We can respect their humanity while not respecting their beliefs or holding them as true. Respect means more "appreciate" than "admire" in this kind of case. I can appreciate that my neighbors are misguided without disowning them as neighbors or humans because they are misguided.

It feels like this is what is said when people use "respect" as a synonym for "admiration." Which it can be, but not in every usage. Basic respect for one's humanity isn't about admiration, but recognizing their humanness, similar subjective and fallible experience as our own, and human rights.

And also what "shutting down opposing views" means.

Personally declaring war is exactly what terrorists and Nazis and killers are doing. They all think they're justified by how bad their targets are. Don't make that mistake.

We stop their harms, we don't stop their breath. Or we are indeed the next set of inhumane killers. If it comes to war, then you have the self-defense wartime justifications. But you don't get to personally declare war.

Ah, the rookie/rightist mistake of not making a distinction between ideology and people. "Stomping out Nazis" does't stomp out »Naziism« or it would already be gone. We don't tolerate the Naziism, but we can't rescind the human rights of ppl w/shit ideas currently riding around in their heads.
