A black-and-white Avocet stands motionless in shallow wetland water, facing the camera with an unimpressed expression, as if waiting for an explanation. Its long blue-grey legs are partly submerged and its thin, upturned bill curves slightly to one side. Gentle ripples surround the bird, with soft, blurred wetland tones in the background.

Respect Wetlands. Or explain it to this Avocet.

A Glossy Ibis wades in shallow water, its long curved bill submerged as it forages. The bird has a rich chestnut-brown body with iridescent green and purple feathers on its wings and back. The water is calm, creating a soft reflection of the bird. Photo taken by Paula Moore

We had a very special visitor on Cornmill Meadows this weekend! A Glossy Ibis made an appearance and brought lots of joy to visitors and birders alike ❀️

Volunteers planting Scarce Tufted-sedge in the wetland at Silvermeade

There’s hope for the critically endangered Scarce Tufted-sedge plant (Carex cespitosa). Found at just 1 UK site, Lee Valley Regional Park Authority joined a recovery plan, spearheaded by Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust
to save the wetland plant from extinction in the UK. ow.ly/wbtC50Vwn6C 🌾
