and my large box from Neewer is here...
Sure, G.A.S is a whole thing, but, a pristine gen 3 70-200 2.8 for 800 is a steal and I don't have anything that fast for indoor/evening shooting.
Alright, film, battery, door latch repaired.
It's taken a bit of cleaning contacts and stealing the sticky foam piece from the old battery to keep it perfectly in place...and the Elan IIe is alive!
I don't have any pictures from it yet, so uhh, settle for this foul ball I took last season.
Bonus seal cuteness, featuring my previous bestie.
Honestly, I feel like it'll be hard to be out money if I decide to resell it all, given what I paid for a body and lens and the part was 10 bucks and a few minutes of time.
Latch repair on the Elan IIe seems to be successful, just need batteries to arrive (film came today) and then I can see if I've truly wasted my money.
Also re-discovered my wife's old powershot while trying to clean up. It's had the AA's left in it, so that's the first thing to tackle...
No problems with the lens going to 35/50/70mm and autofocusing.
The autofocus noise is...something. Like, people complain about how loud older usm lenses are, like my gen 1 100-400...it's a muscle car vs a sub-compact in comparison.
It'd spook small animals and/or babies.
Good news, I didn't notice the uv filter, and once removed, I was able to clean the front lens element and the mark seems to be gone.
Now unsure how much I really want to figure out the source of that rattle before testing it more.
So I'll have to pick those up, batteries, film. Luckily I'm still using a DSLR as my main camera so aside from...one? ef-s lens(18-55) I can swap between them between the two.
The lens also has a bit of a rattle, however AF and MF both work, I should check if it's properly zooming to the extent of both ranges, but I think I might take a crack at taking it apart.
The combo was only 30 bucks, though the film door is broken (as is common on the model). No body or lens caps
Went and grabbed the thrift shop camera today, an Elan IIe, the e I didn't notice yesterday in my quick look, but might be interesting to try out the eye tracking.
The lens in looking through it with the naked eye has a small curved line mark that doesn't show up in test shots with the 7dmkii 1/?
I have succesfully got it all back together, slightly better than when I took it apart, but the shutter still doesn't work so it'll sit on the shelf.
Anyway, I mentioned the thrift store camera to my wife and she said I should get it, especially at it's price, so I guess that's for tomorrow.
Got it more apart, figured out how the shutter works in theory if I move certain parts.
The one reddit thread already has the button removed, but, a spring that's disconnected on mine, which reconnecting doesn't seem to fix much.
No matter what, the shutter button doesn't really...touch anything
I decided I wasn't going to buy it until I at least tried to repair my Minolta 16p, since I already owned a broken camera.
Progress has been made on disassemby, but not much, and honestly not sure about reassembly at this point.
There is next to no info on this model online. One reddit thread.
Having the intrusive thought of picking up an EOS 50 from the local thrift store with a 35-70.
The film door is broken, which is a common problem it seems, common enough I could 3d print a part or get one for like, 10 bucks.
I should probably sleep on it, and test the lens if they'd let me.
If you're having a bad day, at least you're not this heron. It's cold, everything's frozen, and you're having a bad feather day.

Went back out to the feeder with a proper lens instead of a wide angle zoom.
Not pictured or at least in anything I want to post
The house sparrow that invaded the garage and I had to shoo out.
The male cardinal who was hiding behind the car and took off.
Shots like this before I changed my shutter speed.
The quick shot of the Downy woodpecker's not great, but I like this one of the grackle grabbing some seed.
Lets see if I can get all of these right.
Eastern Bluebird
House Finch
Carolina Wren
Dark-eyed Junco
Getting some shots of the feeders in the storm and just...fuck that one blackbird in particular who would not sit still for a single shot.
Less blurry shots of other birds to come.
Hiked out to Kilgore Falls today in Rocks State Park and played around with framing and long exposure shots. This ended up being one of my favorites, f/16, 1/10s, with a K&F ND4 filter. Can't wait to go back later this Spring, but before it gets too crowded.
Need to finish my coffee, pack my bag and go drag myself on a hike while the weathers still good.
Well "good", it's still below freezing, but I need my Miles for Maryland...miles and hopefully at least a few good shots.
Really didn't have a super great morning out, I was hoping low tide might give me some different birds than normal, but at this time of year it just meant it was pretty dead.
I do have to thank an elderly birder who pointed out these buffleheads in the distance though.
hehe, butts.
Sure, I may be middle-aged, but, sometimes it's nice to feel like I'm in middle-school instead.

I don't think I quite noticed at the time, but I did manage to catch this heron successfully grab a fish.
