19.02.2026 14:49 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Two magazines about ICE's immigration crackdown, provided by the coffee shop, on a table in the coffee shop.
People are mad about this because ICE is "very pointedly" not part of the community, and some have even started boycotting. But the workers at the coffee chain say this isn't the full storyβbecause management is allowing them to put up "NO ICE" signs on their doors.

This week @matternews.bsky.social: A Columbus coffee chain has been under fire for saying it would not refuse to serve ICE agents; but the people who work there say thatβs not the full story. Raises interesting questions about how businesses should handle ICE visits:

This week at @matternews.bsky.social : Columbus received a fat check from the state this month, because for the past two years, people here have sold weed. And nobody seems to know what weβre going to use it for.

Guys, I was on a podcast! Huge thank you to @marksimon.bsky.social for letting me talk for way too long. Give a listen to hear how I approach stupid questions and what it's like to pursue journalism while working a full-time job. Crazy, but it can be done I think. open.spotify.com/episode/7wmT...

For @404media.co this morning: a group of immigrant rights organizers are helping people use Fortnite to practice what to do if they encounter ICE agents in the wild. And I got to see it.

This institutionalism is, in part, historical. ... In 1912, voters passed the cityβs first charter, which switched the model from ward-based to fully at-large. In order to run city-wide, candidates would need substantially more resources than previously required.

Politics this month in Columbus: an unassuming end to the city's most contentious election this year might not be as disappointing as you think. matternews.org/voices/local...

Guess who's now writing the Local Politics column for @matternews.bsky.social ! My first this month is about the Columbus Ohio school board elections next weekβ but it's actually a lot more than that. If you have city politics tips for Columbus, please find me :)

A long time coming for @404media.co: @jasonkoebler.bsky.social and I looked at hundreds of pages of court docs to see what lawyers say when they're caught using AI. Some good ones include being a lawyer is hard, good advertising, and "I didn't mess up actually":
www.404media.co/18-lawyers-c...
Spent many (many!) hours pulling legal explanations and apologies from lawyers who were caught using AI that hallucinated in which they explained to a judge why they used AI. The explanations are astonishing and extremely good:

New from 404 Media: deep-sea fishers can spend 10 months at sea, but they're not allowed to use the ship's Wi-Fi, meaning they can't talk to their families back home. Now they're fighting back for change.

Crazy story today: this group of distant water fishermen is fighting for Wi-Fi on their boats so they can talk to their families (or anyone else in the outside world) for the ten months a year they're out at sea.

I mean, itβs definitely local local local newsβ¦but itβs actually really interesting! And Iβm having a hell of a good time covering it. So if you want to follow drama that has nothing to do with you, give it a read :) 5/5 read.thebostonguardian.com/the-boston-g...
20.02.2025 19:45 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This plan was dropped in peopleβs laps on Jan 8 with a public comment deadline of Feb 5. Whatβs also interesting is that this plan has been in the works for six years, with very different goals. But the guy who came up with this version of it was hired last September, after being ...let go?β¦ by the previous mayorβs administration. 3/ www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2015/0...

I don't post much about this because it's a paper-first news org, but I've been covering some pretty drama-filled news for the Boston Guardian. e.g.:
The city is pausing a new zoning plan after getting over 500 letters of opposition. But it gets better. 1/
