Ambitious project to develop low-cost genome sequencing for pathogens known and unknown - University of Birmingham Project will build on research that helped diagnostic labs to adopt sequencing capacity for COVID-19 and permit characterisation of future infectious threats

Absolutely thrilled to announce the launch of ARTIC2 - a Β£5.5M 5 year project funded by @wellcometrust.bsky.social to build on the ARTIC approach of low-cost, globally accessible genome sequencing for surveillance of outbreaks, epidemics and endemic diseases: www.birmingham.ac.uk/news/2025/am...

Pathogen Genomics in Healthcare with Alex Sundermann
YouTube video by The Bioinformatics Lab Pathogen Genomics in Healthcare with Alex Sundermann

@sundermannaj.bsky.social's work highlights the undeniable impacts of pathogen genomics in healthcare. But pathogen genomics in healthcare remains the exception, not the norm.

We spent an hour exploring the challenges and potential solutions to more broad adoption.

Huge disparity in genomic data: We support all efforts to increase the genomic surveillance of pathogens on a global scale as dynamics differ locally: what happens in one place does not translate to another and high-risk clones can emerge anywhere […]

New HPAI genotype found in Nevada dairy cows APHIS confirms first detection of D1.1 genotype in dairy cattle through NMTS testing.

Genotype D1.1 of H5N1 confirmed in Nevada cattle, which is the one circulating in birds and not B3.13, causing the wider cattle epizootic in the U.S.

In other words, this is a second observed jump from birds into cows.

Keep rolling the dice, shall we?

All of the American Public Health Labs (APHL) Global Health team has been furloughed. This is everyone outside of the US, including deployed staff and locally employed staff. These are people working on infectious diseases (and more) all over the world. Designing tests. Improving diagnostics. Improving lab procedures. This is a huge team, doing critical work.

Critical disease-related publications like MMWR (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report) are frozen, with no release this week. This report is a lifeblood of health events in the USA. it has been published weekly without pause since 1960. It is essential for keeping all US (and global) researchers updated on outbreaks and investigations. This week alone there were reportedly to be 3 publications on the bird flu. The publication is also a likely venue for further information about the ongoing Tuberculosis outbreak in Kansas. (Source: Reuters)

It's all gone. They've taken down all the CDC datasets from data.cdc.gov

Data that's critical for public health & research. Data paid for by citizens. That the government now censors.
