"Contested Catch is a terrific book that makes an enormous contribution to our understanding of Canada’s most valuable – but under-studied – fishery, as well as the ways in which the modern state has functioned in Canada." Edward MacDonald, University of Prince Edward Island

Screen capture of a book cover. It's a white background with a picture of part of a multicolored lobster dominating the bottom 2/3 of the cover. Book title is Contested catch: lobster, localism and Canada's Atlantic coast, 1870 to 1970

It's finally here. A history of the Nova Scotia lobster fishery.

Morton is truly an historian's historian, and from the installments I've seen, the book is going to have riches of social history, politics, economics, and even some marine biology.

Concluding thoughts at the end of a dishwashing conversation with my spouse (who has been teaching secondary school math for more than 20 years): teaching is hard.

Something we both love. But definitely hard to do well.

For many Quebecers who express their faith visibly, Bill 21 has meant lost jobs, stalled ambitions, and a deep sense of alienation—of being made to feel like second-class citizens in a province they call home. thewalrus.ca/bill-21-quebec/

Likewise, @caitbeaumont.bsky.social. I loved your keynote at @whaireland.bsky.social #WHAI2025 last week! Such a thoughtful and remarkable reflection on your grandmother’s history and the merging of historical approaches.
