Incidentally, one of the things that program has done the best is instill communication skills!

It’s why I mentioned Syracuse’s sports analytics program, because that sure seemed like a boondoggle when it was announced, but it has produced some genuinely impressive grads who are already making waves in the field despite being around for under a decade.

It depends a lot on what is or is not included in the core requirements. Comp Sci is now the most popular major at my (small, liberal arts) alma mater, but it’s much more “I’m doing CS to pursue work in molecular biology” rather than CS for its own sake. If this program is that, it could work.

The technical barriers to entry are so low, and it’s now so easy to produce bottom shelf derivative content that the “form” isn’t going to be the thing, it’s going to be the substance. And if you don’t know anything about anything, where does the substance come from?

I don’t disagree in general, though I worry that this program will focus on form over substance.

On one hand, this seems ridiculous. On the other hand, it seemed ridiculous when Syracuse started a sports analytics major about a decade ago, and that program has been a tremendous success.

If you gave them truth serum, they’d probably admit it’s something of a freeroll for them. If the video slop doesn’t somehow make them profitable, they’ll be broke & judgment proof before anyone can recover anything, or they’ll make so much money that paying settlements will be drops in the bucket
