I am not saying the universities shouldnt have sports (even sports at the level we currently have), but a just society would reclaim 90% of the $10 million that was paid to Dan Lanning last year to coach the Ducks and put that money toward the budget deficit at the college of arts and sciences

It's not outlandish to imagine conditioning donations to athletics on proportional donations to academics. And, regardless of where the money comes from, no institution should be paying out millions of dollars to one individual. This is especialy true for supposedly public schools!

It's a tough ask politcially for sure, which is why we avoid it. but also there already are, and will be more strikes if profs and office staff keep getting laid off

The formal separation of the athletic dept from the academics does not negate the fact that this money could be much better allocated to education, particularly when institutions of higher ed are slashing budgets and laying off thousands of workers across the country
