A week ago, I decided to pick a Premier League team to root for, while learning about soccer.
Here’s a few things on my mind after one week.

It took all of one day considering Premier League teams to figure out what I DON’T want to do with this little project.
I scratched out a list of “No” late last night

Hasn’t Fulham generally gone between promotion and relegation for the last bunch of years?

Once upon a time, I covered high school soccer for the Asbury Park Press.
Whether or not I did it well remains up for debate roughly 15 years later.

Still in Austin for the time being, looking for the next gig, but point stands..
Help me pick a soccer team to root for.
There is a Liverpool bar in Austin.
When the fabled English soccer club was on the cusp of winning the Premier League, it was a mob scene.
It looked like fun, I wanted in.
Help a dumb, soccer-deficient American pick a Premier League team.
Off we go: open.substack.com/pub/joshnewm...
Too cliche.
I’m better than that.
I’m not against picking a Championship team and rooting for promotion to EPL.
One thing I’m very sure, I don’t want to root for a very established super power.
I’m a stupid American who knows very little about soccer.
I’ve decided to dive into Premier League fandom and will document the whole thing.
For starters, I need help picking a team to root for.

16.03.2025 18:23 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Here’s why the Texas resume is fascinating.
Seven Quadrant 1 wins should absolutely get you in, but most of their metrics otherwise, including a 12-15 effective record and a horrid NC SOS, should absolutely leave you out.
No correct answer, per se, when that’s the resume.
NEW: Texas is done at the SEC Tournament.
It is now left to wait and scoreboard watch at 19-15 overall, with seven Quadrant 1 wins and blah metrics.
Attention turns to bubble-related matters this evening in the ACC and the Mountain West.

Memphis and Wichita State are about to tip in the AAC quarters.
Wrote this morning that Texas fans should be paying attention to the American, because if someone other than Memphis wins it, it's going to be a problem:

NEW: It’s Friday, Texas is through to the SEC quarters, and is right at the NCAA Tournament cutline.
Where things stand, what’s coming, and why Texas fans need to pay close attention to the AAC Tournament:

Texas fans should be rooting for Marquette right now against Xavier.
Musketeers are exceptionally bubbly, absolutely need a win here to get in.
NEW: When Texas opens spring practice March 25, a handful of depth chart guys will not be full participants due to injury.
Chief among the absences: Redshirt sophomore running back CJ Baxter, who continues his way back from an August knee injury

The notion Steve Sarkisian wouldn’t leave Texas because Arch Manning is the QB is flat incorrect.
11.03.2025 00:33 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0NEW: NFL teams coming to talk to Steve Sarkisian in the wake of 25-4 and two CFP semis since 2023 came as no surprise.
Sarkisian opted to balk, parlaying the whole thing to another contract extension.
Here's what he said today when I asked about it: www.lonestarlive.com/longhorns/fo...
NEW: Texas is among the P4 teams opting to not have a spring game next month.
While other coaches like Matt Rhule cited potential tampering, Steve Sarkisian put a pin in that factor, and instead leaned on other reasoning.
www.lonestarlive.com/longhorns/fo...
NEW: A few brief highlights from Steve Sarkisian's pre-spring presser include Arch Manning taking over, a nothing answer on declining NFL interest back in January, and more:
www.lonestarlive.com/longhorns/fo...
Sarkisian: "Four of five guys who wont participate early in spring."
Derek Williams, CJ Baxter, DeAndre Moore, Colton Vasek will not fully participate.
Others will be limited.
Sarkisian: Move to NFL-style OTAs is a "philosophical change."
27 new players showed up in January, 22 of them from high school. Everyone needs to get acclimated, on the same page.
Sarkisian offered a VERY long preamble here.
Big takeaway: Defended not having a spring game, went on to say it's not about the fear of tampering.
Spring is upon us.
Steve Sarkisian coming up at 11:30, first meeting with the local hacks since the Cotton Bowl.
I guess this is the place to be today………
10.03.2025 15:42 — 👍 5 🔁 1 💬 1 📌 0The Texas women are going to be a 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament, but this bludgeoning by South Carolina in the SEC championship game is a reminder of what/who it’ll have to go through to win the whole thing in a few weeks.
09.03.2025 20:40 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0NEW/ Texas’ final SEC availability report late this afternoon was clean, so junior guard Chendall Weaver is indeed available tonight after missing 15 straight with a hip.
Weaver has been out since Jan. 7:
