I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

These are times that recommend a hefty dollop of grim resolve mixed into a large bowl of pessimism but there isn't a prize for being the most pessimistic pessimist last I checked, and noting the pockets of light still visible doesn't invalidate a sober-minded assessment of the darkness.
