Correct, but it *does* matter that the only source anyone can find for the claim that Platner’s wife is Jewish appears to be the Substack of a notorious white supremacist anti-immigrant nutjob

Except in this case it’s “he can’t be antisemitic, because an infamous white supremacist incorrectly *thinks* that he and his wife are secretly Jewish, even though both of their families appear to be of German Christian ancestry”

(That said, the bigoted parts of the US right are constantly accusing each other of being secretly Jewish or secretly gay or secretly etc.)

Brimelow (the infamous white supremacist who is the apparent source of the original “Platner’s wife is Jewish” claim) thinks that Platner and his wife are both secret Jews hiding their true identities and that their ~secret Jewishness~ is why he is running for the Democrats.

“The chances that Graham Platner is a closet Nazi are, needless to say, absolutely zero.” So says Brimelow *with obvious disappointment* in context

I mean, to be fair, I soured on Grim a while ago and even I was shocked by the apparent reliance on Brimelow.

(9) If you’re avoiding the specific details of what people object to and are either generalizing to the point of abstraction or trying to deflect from the substance of the issue via theoretical Jewish friends, ancestors or step-siblings…you are not actually making an argument.

(8) If you want to argue that being a military history buff with an SS Totenkopf tattoo for 20 years is no big deal, just say that. If you think it’s cool for a candidate to be a longtime fan of a podcast that claims Soros funded Zohran Mamdani because Israel wanted Mamdani to be mayor, say that.

(7) Finally, I am so tired of people trying to point to actual or possible or imaginary minority friends or family or ancestors as weird genetic exculpatory proof of non-bigotry instead of actually engaging with the substance of what someone has done and/or said and defending it.

(4) It only took a few hours after Grim’s post for genealogists with expertise in tracing Jewish ancestry in Europe to determine that Platner’s ancestors are German Catholics & his wife’s ancestors are German Calvinists, not Jews.

(3) Brimelow, the founder of the anti-immigrant white supremacist site VDARE, thinks that both Platner *and* his wife are Jewish, seemingly based on their German last names and the fact that a different woman from a totally different state with the same name as Platner’s wife has a Jewish mother.

(1) It is not particularly uncommon for bigots to have individual friends or even spouses from groups about whom they hold incredibly bigoted beliefs.

(2) The only “source” anyone can find for the claim that Platner’s wife is Jewish is the Substack of notorious white supremacist Peter Brimelow.

Anyway, there are lots of bigoted people who marry members of groups they hold bigoted beliefs about anyway but it still seems relevant that Grim’s big ‘gotcha’ is a false claim whose source appears to be a notorious conspiratorial anti-immigrant white supremacist

In the 12ish hours since Grim’s post, Jewish genealogists have looked into this and their initial research indicates that Platner’s wife’s ancestors are Catholic and Platner’s are Calvinist.

Worse: there is no actual reason to believe that Platner’s wife is Jewish. The source of this claim appears to be the Substack of Peter Brimelow, the white supremacist founder of VDARE, who believes that both Platner *and* his wife are secretly Jewish, based on their German last names.

I haven't read his Substack post and don't intend to, but as far as I can tell the only evidence Brimelow* has garnered for his contention that both Platner and his wife are secretly Jews is that they both have German names, which, yes, they do. But most Germans aren't Jewish, including them.

Thorough debunking by an actual professional genealogist of that ridiculous Ryan Grim post about Platner's wife being Jewish (sourced from a highly speculative post by the VDARE guy). Wife's ancestry is Bavarian Catholic, Platner's own is Palatine Calvinist, no Jews anywhere to be found.

This is a great argument if you know literally nothing about the history of racism generally and antisemitism in particular.
