Libyan authorities should urgently surrender Osama Elmasry Njeem to the @IntlCrimCourt where he is wanted for murder, torture, rape.
For too long, those responsible for grave abuses in Libya have been allowed to evade accountability.
Time to flip the script.

As world institutions wobble, The Hague has unexpectedly become the stage for a reckoning long denied in the Philippines. My take in @AJEnglish on the recent hearing at the International Criminal Court in the case of ex-president Rodrigo Duterte www.aljazeera.com/opinions/202...
Former president of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte is facing a landmark hearing at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
Over the next week, ICC judges will hear evidence to determine whether to send this case to trial. Learn more from HRW ⤵️
At a time when the #ICC is under assault, moments like today’s hearing are a stark reminder of its importance as a critical court of last resort, an avenue for justice for victims who have nowhere else to turn.
As the victims’ legal rep made powerful remarks, victims’ family members were weeping. He made clear that the alleged crimes affected not only his clients, but also their communities. Indeed, the incidents selected by the prosecution are meant to represent a broader pattern of criminality.
Duterte was not in the courtroom as he waived his right to be there. But despite that, the importance of this day loomed large for those present and those following from the Philippines. And one message was clear: no one is above the law, even those who believe to be untouchable.
It was an immense privilege to be at the #ICC today, at the opening of the confirmation of charges hearing in the case against #Duterte, sitting with @elainepearson.bsky.social
in a packed public gallery with brave advocates, victims’ families without whom this day would've not been possible.

🚨The #ICC hearing to decide whether to confirm the charges against #Duterte and send his case to trial begins tomorrow. @hrw.org will be in The Hague to observe the proceedings.

Former Philippine President #Duterte wrongly thought he was untouchable, beyond the reach of the law.
From February 23 to 27 #ICC judges will hear evidence to decide whether to confirm the charges against him and send his case to trial.

#EU 's passivity on eastern #DRCongo crisis is no sign of leadership. At #FAC today, EU ministers should:
⛑️Increase humanitarian aid
⚖️Call for accountability
🚫Urge end of #Rwanda's support to #M23 & #DRCongo's to abusive groups
✍️ Sanction commanders responsible of crimes

And it's a wrap! Merit hearings in the landmark genocide case brought at the #ICJ by Gambia against Myanmar have concluded.
See my @hrw.org colleagues' reflections on the significance of this development in the Rohingya's long struggle for justice: www.hrw.org/news/2026/01...
#ICC Deputy Prosecutor Nazhat Shameem Khan debriefed #UNSC on #Darfur last week remotely as she was not granted a US visa in light of #Trump administration's ICC-related sanctions. #UNSC and #ICC members should support the court and its vital work for #justice in Darfur.

A historic moment in the Hague — International Court of Justice judges are hearing the merits in Gambia’s case against Myanmar under the Genocide Convention.
Learn more about the landmark case pursuing justice:
Tun Khin from BROUK: "To fully address the scale of the crimes against the Rohingya, it is key to seek justice and accountability through different avenues. This case and the pursuit of justice are not only about accountability for past atrocities, but about preventing future ones."
Elise Keppler @globaljusticec.bsky.social: "Genocide does not unfold only through mass killing. In Myanmar, targeted sexual and reproductive violence inflicted on Rohingya women and girls was designed to break families, threaten futures, and eliminate the possibility of survival as a group."
Shayna Bauchner from @hrw.org: “The Myanmar military’s vicious cycles of abuses and impunity need to end. This should begin with governments holding the junta to its legal obligation to comply with the ICJ-ordered provisional measures.”
@waiwainu.bsky.social from @womenspeacenetwork.org: "Seeing Gambia’s landmark case against Myanmar finally enter the merits phase delivers renewed hope to Rohingya that our decades-long suffering may finally end."
On January 12 the ICJ will hear the merits in the landmark genocide case by Gambia against Myanmar.

‼️#ASP24 starts today! #ICC Member countries should use their annual meeting:
➡️Defend the ICC and those cooperating with it, including within civil society
➡️Robustly enforce findings of non-cooperation
➡️Provide the court with the resources it needs
New from @hrw.org 👇
www.hrw.org/news/2025/12...
3⃣ Providing the #ICC with the resources it needs in its regular budget to build the necessary resilience, while also continuing to robustly carry out its global mandate:
✅ Adopt adequate annual budget for 2026
✅ Raise Contingency Fund level and allow for its automatic replenishment
2⃣ Robustly responding to non-cooperation in the face of some states parties failing to uphold their obligations to arrest and surrender individuals wanted by the #ICC:
*⃣ Italy👉Njeem www.icc-cpi.int/court-record...
*⃣ Hungary👉Netanyahu www.icc-cpi.int/court-record...
*⃣ Tajikistan👉Putin
➡️ Ensuring adequate political support - Speak up in defense of the #ICC & civil society, and against efforts to undermine their critical work for justice.
➡️ Putting in place concrete measures to minimize the effects of coercive measures, including sanctions (e.g., EU Blocking Statute).
1⃣ Defending international justice in the face of ongoing threats and attacks, including #US sanctions targeting the #ICC and those supporting its essential work.
States parties have a responsibility—and the ability—to push back and protect them 💪
This means⬇️
On December 1, #ASP24 is starting in The Hague!
