I genuinely appreciate that. Thanks
I was on a train from Baltimore on Sunday and couldn’t help but overhear these two guys next to me, a younger major (at Space Command??) and an older guy who had been a chaplain and held other positions. The older one, at younger’s request, was explaining the region. He called Iran “the final boss.”
The Chaplain! That’s what he said.
“Hi, I’m Johnny Knoxville. Welcome to the Strait of Hormuz.”
What are THOSE?!!
Hegseth drove himself this morning, I see
When an AIPAC-backed candidate is so threatened by Kat Abughazaleh that Laura Fine sends one of her staffers to try & infiltrate Kat’s ground game, you know Kat’s doing something right.
Reject dark money, reject the forever war. Fight for real progress & democracy.
This may be the baldest lie ever uttered. There has never been one second of Trump’s life that he has cared about what happens after he shuffles off his spray-tanned mortal coil
Full birdbrain, more like
So it wasn’t a mistake
Ah that’s where the new slogan comes in:
“Professor Cubes: They’re Stackable Orbs”
My institution is turning its professors into cubes.
This was part of the fascination that kept me tuned in, for sure.
Pretty sure that’s what I heard. They both found it in college? Or just after? The younger one’s dad was divorced abd not religious when he (the kid) was younger, but the stepmom was more so — but not Mormon.
Also, the younger one has a Zyn habit he picked up on bases
No, I think it was a mission for the gov.
I was either going to blow a gasket or start yelling, so I moved to the dining car.
I have since felt a certain sense of moral failure for not speaking up — maybe it would’ve put some seeds of doubt in the younger guy’s mind.
He continued,
“Over time, institutions became more pro-Palestine and anti-Israel.”
Younger guy: “There has to be a reason for that.”
“I think it’s just [people think] the Jews don’t deserve a state. … I don’t think it’s a fight over land at all.”
And then, the younger Major who was asking earnest and obvious questions about the region (for which he clearly had no context) started asking … why so much conflict?
The PhD in Israel studies: “They just didn’t believe the Jewish people should have sovereignty.”
But then it got darker. The younger one is supposed to go to Israel for “a mission” in April, and had questions.
The older guy said “we’ll see if this war has subsided a little bit.”
Like a bad patch of weather
They were both Mormon converts, and at first I was curiously eavesdropping on that: ““You should get married.”
“I’m trying. If I found the female version of me, I’d marry her in a second.”
And
“I’m glad my wife is a very dedicated mother.”

Folks, I have created a very very important poll/test and I would like you to take it so I can share the important results.

That’s incredible
(Cf. Amazon laying people off and then dealing with AI-coding errors, or the Admin “efficiently” rehiring a bunch of civil servants it laid off in the name of efficiency)
…which was remedied over time by the return to Coke Classic. I’m kind of liking the analogy!
The pivot to LLM-generation is New Coke. One hopes we’ll decide there’s “Nothing like the real thing, baby.”
Funnily enough, I read somewhere that the results of the Pepsi Challenge didn’t hold up if you kept drinking. People responded to novelty, but preferred Coke over time. However, this didn’t stop the disastrous implementation of New Coke…

Look what they did to Elizabeth Bishop!
Possibly—in part because the A.I. excerpts are presumably not part of some longer arc! I just think it’s a mug’s game even to play. Also, why do Bishop’s “The Fish” like that?
Truly pernicious quiz — isolated literary paragraphs and poems stripped of their lineation. Context is everything! This tells us nothing.
