It's been a rough year for us (all of us). We've received zero donations to our scholarship fund, so our applications have far outpaced the $600 we set aside for scholarships and financial aid. We have fewer volunteers, fewer people registered, and many unfilled staff positions. It's rough.

Show up. Speak up. Together we can make sure KBtL stays for the long haul. It's tough running a conference about marginalization in kink. We are consistently sort of broke as a conference. But we're still here. And we're going to keep showing up and speaking up until we can't anymore. So help us!

In Dutch, it straddles these two concepts within one word and can mean both things depending on context. A way it is most frequently translated into English is with 'high intellectual potential' which is a term that in English is also polarized and therefore overlaps the most with the Dutch term.

It can be translated as 'high giftedness' or 'high talent' and usually is. But it can also have connotations similar to 'intellectual superiority' or 'genius', which as a term carries a more negative connotation in English.

Are we not as a community hypocrites if we do not give the same open mind, grace, acceptance, and respect to non-kink topics?

'Hoogbegraafdheid' doesn't have a perfect translation in English.

We preach about safe spaces and inclusivity. We accept the most wild and unexpected kink activities. But gosh, if something stinks of kink shaming, then we stand ready to defend immediately.

It triggers memories of how I was treated as a child, teen, and adult when I dared to show something of my high intellectual potential.^
I am also very disappointed in the kink community.
