I’ve been thinking about this a lot and in general I think the “subcommunity embedded in broader general purpose platform” model of social media is Simply Dead now. It’s unpleasant to talk to people outside your regular cluster unless you’re seeking out the confrontation

The only Advantage this model has left in my mind is discoverability which matters for moneymaking purposes but has no positive effect on the experience as an end user. I haven't thought about it too much but you've given me something to chew on

The way people engage in these fights has changed substantially too I believe. It's far more common to obfuscate your real knowledge level and engage in arguments you really have no business claiming any level of understanding or even passing familiarity on. That rarely ever happened before i feel.

Yep! I've removed shorts from my feed on desktop and use revanced on phone which let me remove a bunch of the distracting UI so I don't experience this anymore but the reason I had to do that in the first place was how annoying i found it lol

I've been told I'm a hypocrite for saying I hate tiktok and instagram when I link youtube shorts but it's about how you engage with the content that matters not what the content is.

If I was scrolling them I'd agree but we're fundamentally misrepresenting my position!!!

I'm the same! I'll watch one if it looks intriguing just like any other video but I refuse to scroll on principle.

I share a similar philosophy with text content scrolling but to a much lesser degree.

You have to make decisions regarding your enjoyment or you're going to zombify.
