This piece is something to pair with your morning coffee.
Who knew Kinkade pissed on a Winnie the Pooh statue during a visit to a Disney Hotel, and left a vault filled with paintings of distorted faces, and barren landscapes?

Thomas Kinkadeβs paintings show conservatives a world they have already won.

Screenshot of the DHS tweeting "Protect the Homeland" with a painting called Morning Pledge by Thomas Kinked; it shows an idealized small-town America, the pavement slick with rain, a church with an American flag, two figures walking past a white picket fence
Why did DHS share a painting by Thomas Kinkade? @sarahjones.bsky.social explains his importance to the evangelical movement: "His imaginary 1950s, without immigration or the civil rights movement, was where millions of people wanted to live long before MAGA." www.dissentmagazine.org/online_artic...

"Kinkadeβs art was bad art, and culture did not have to be the enemy of faith. My Christian parents could tell you that musical proficiency is about more than technical skill; a good performance requires something of those who perform it and those who perceive it."

The average Kinkade cottage was a mass-produced commodity, and it took hardly more effort to generate than todayβs agit-slop. And even if the Bridge of Hope is a bit less blunt than alligators in ICE hats, Kinkadeβs work is inescapably ideological.

A really useful piece on what a progressive agenda within constraints might look like. The housing policy is especially strategic - moving beyond sloganeering to outline overlapping levels of intervention. This bit on public service delivery seems like one that should be read more widely.
