This piece is something to pair with your morning coffee.

Who knew Kinkade pissed on a Winnie the Pooh statue during a visit to a Disney Hotel, and left a vault filled with paintings of distorted faces, and barren landscapes?

"Marx denounced the nineteenth-century factory floor as intrinsically alienating. Much of our doom-scrolling experienceβ€”on social media in particularβ€”is no less dehumanizing than the assembly line...

"We should work to cut these services down or out entirely."

Finally, someone is saying it!

Why did DHS share a painting by Thomas Kinkade? @sarahjones.bsky.social explains his importance to the evangelical movement: "His imaginary 1950s, without immigration or the civil rights movement, was where millions of people wanted to live long before MAGA." www.dissentmagazine.org/online_artic...

"Kinkade’s art was bad art, and culture did not have to be the enemy of faith. My Christian parents could tell you that musical proficiency is about more than technical skill; a good performance requires something of those who perform it and those who perceive it."

The average Kinkade cottage was a mass-produced commodity, and it took hardly more effort to generate than today’s agit-slop. And even if the Bridge of Hope is a bit less blunt than alligators in ICE hats, Kinkade’s work is inescapably ideological.

A really useful piece on what a progressive agenda within constraints might look like. The housing policy is especially strategic - moving beyond sloganeering to outline overlapping levels of intervention. This bit on public service delivery seems like one that should be read more widely.
