The core problem in US peace efforts is prioritizing speed over conditions. The way to push for a quick end is, of course, to pressure Ukraine. A lasting peace demands the reverse: conditions over speed. Those conditions must involve Russia’s defeat, otherwise it will pave the path to a larger war.

The undisputed winners of the “peace deal” collapse? Russians who do not live in Moscow and St. Petersburg and are not elite, since in one of the 28 points was basically the Kremlin saying they were ok if Ukraine would launch missiles towards Russian regions.
