Oof. That’s really bad. Social media really brings out the worst in people.

I was shocked at how often the atmosphere was so easily pumping out beautiful dendrites day after day after day. Certainly wasn't upset about it!!

@professorpowder.bsky.social Just returned from 5 days in Niseko and I was astounded at the snowflake quality (and the skiing!). Does the presence of sea salt as ice nuclei from the Sea of Japan in any way improve snowflake/dendritic production?

I am heartbroken for my NWS colleagues today.

Working in the weather field is a calling many of us feel in our bones. We are drawn to the power and beauty of the atmosphere and joined in a desire to help and serve others.

To everyone affected, I am sorry.

High probability for excessive snowfall rates later this evening. Up to 2" per hour kind of rates around midnight for parts of Connecticut. Not a big storm but most of what we get will fall in a short window.

Storm Eowyn is a beast tonight as it heads toward Ireland.

Yeah I was watching it leading up to the event and it struck me as odd and I couldn't find any explanation in the ECMWF literature.

We were talking about this the other day. What's with SOT of zero in the southern zone? Is it because M Climate for 24-hour snow is 0" near and south of MSY so SOT isn't computed?

The northern mismatch makes sense I think... most members but the ones that do show something extreme. The southern mismatch I think is an issue with M Climate = 0" so it's not computing a SOT?

Not sure how often such climatologically extreme scenarios happen - record-setting <942mb low off Ireland contrasted with a record-setting >1064mb high over Kazakhstan this coming Friday:

Yeah it's weird to see Houston with an EFI of 1 and SOT of 0. Seems like it must have to do the M-Climate for Houston for 24h snow being 0"? Maybe @alexlamers.bsky.social has an idea.

What's the deal with the displacement of the high SOT values from the higher EFI values? Like the EFI >8 in N LA with EFI <0.5?
