Grammarly turned me into an AI editor against my will and I hate it The company tells Platformer it will let experts opt out of the controversial feature β€” but how different is it than what every other AI company is doing?

"Grammarly curated a list of real people, gave its models free rein to hallucinate plausible-sounding advice on their behalf, and put it all behind a subscription. That's a deliberate choice to monetize the identities of real people without involving them, and it sucks." @caseynewton.bsky.social

All anyone is discussing is how fast gas supply & gas infrastructure can be expanded to meet AI demand. You will not hear the word "climate" uttered in any of those rooms; none of those guys are even pretending to give a shit any more. Boom times, boom mentality.

When you can't control wider events, you can only do the next right thing. For those of us in the climate fight, the next right thing is to bury the fossil fuel system that props up (actual and aspiring) dictators, impoverishes billions, and is used to justify barbaric wars.

Police body cam footage shows DOGE knew Institute of Peace was private property during raid Footage obtained by The Handbasket’s lawsuit shows a hostile takeover on March 17, 2025.

SCOOP β€” Body camera footage obtained as a result of my lawsuit against the DC Metropolitan PD confirms DOGE and the Trump administration openly admitted they were entering private property when they raided the building on March 17, 2025. That didn't stop MPD from breaking down the doors.

Brought my daughter to the @standupforscience.bsky.social rally in NYC this morning! But, fittingly, we couldn't stay long because we needed to get to her school science fair. A big part of what is lost with these cuts is the training of future generations of scientists.

Dear NEH Grantee,
This letter provides notice that the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is terminating your federal grant (Grant Application No. FEL29509824) effective April 3, 2025, in accordance with the termination clause in your Grant Agreement.
Your grant no longer effectuates the agency's needs and priorities and conditions of the Grant
Agreement and is subject to termination due to several reasonable causes, as outlined in 2CFR§200.340.
For instance, NEH has reasonable cause to terminate your grant in light of the fact that the NEH is repurposing its funding allocations in a new direction in furtherance of the President's agenda. The President's February 19, 2025 executive order mandates that the NEH eliminate all non-statutorily required activities and functions. See Commencing the Reduction of the Federal Bureaucracy, E.O. 14217 (Feb. 19, 2025). Your grant's immediate termination is necessary to safeguard the interests of the federal government, including its fiscal priorities. Any objections or appeals to this termination will be managed in strict accordance with the President's Executive Orders,

Last year, this guy (left) from DOGE used ChatGPT to find NEH grants that were too β€œDEI” for Trump, and canceled them, including mine, as shown by the letter I received last April (right). Huge new NYT article on the back story link below

How X’s algorithm shifts political attitudes Algorithms curate what users of social media see, raising concerns that they may distort attitudes and affect social and political outcomes. This column reports on an experiment conducted on X in the US in 2023, in which users were randomly assigned to either an algorithmic or a chronological feed. Switching from a chronological to an algorithmic feed significantly shifted political opinions in a pro-Republican direction, while switching the algorithm off had no comparable effect. This asymmetry arose because the algorithm affected which accounts users chose to follow, leaving a lasting imprint on their information environment even after algorithmic curation was removed.

Nature Report, Killed by Trump, Is Released Independently

Scientists and other experts were preparing an assessment of the health of nature in the US when Trump returned to the White House. He canceled the report. The researchers went ahead and compiled it on their own. This week, they released a 868-p draft for public comment and scientific review.

Delays in awards and funding calls worry NIH-funded researchers Many programs may be pushed into the next fiscal year, and some could face funding gaps

NIH funding is back in limbo, and it’s a mess. Between a 90% drop in new funding notices and White House spending blocks, only about 800 new awards have been made, less than a third of the usual rate.
If these "spend plans" don't clear soon, we’re looking at a major gap in biomedical research.

Yea that's my intuition whenever anyone seeks "general principles": study all the individual cases and see if general principles emerge! (At least I think that's the best way for biology)

So I think the question is: is understanding species differences a more efficient route to understanding the brain compared to going hard on understanding individual species. I don't know!

04.03.2026 12:44 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

In my own field of attention, we have findings in human fmri that show pretty strong modulation by attention in V1, but macaque ephys usually doesn't. It wouldn't be too hard to figure out if that's an fmri/ephys dif, but if not I think we need to know a lot more to understand the species difference

Methodological Mixology: The harmful side of diversity in Neuroscience The range of tools used to study the brain is vast. Neuroscientists toss together ideas from genetics, biochemistry, immunology, physics, computer science, medicine and countless other fields when …

Way back in grad school I wrote about the problem of trying to pull out grand principles from mixed datasets. Of course there is a right way to do it by properly incorporating the differences. But it requires understanding the source of the differences, which is a huge research question on its own.

04.03.2026 12:39 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Good article. I agree we need to reconcile divides across recording methods & analytic approaches, but I'm less sure about species. It's hard to draw conclusions about species differences with limited data from each & I think it may be ok to mostly study species separately until comparison is easier
