⚗️🔭 How do we spark new scientific discoveries? Why do some breakthroughs seem accidental?
The new book 'The Engine of Scientific Discovery' by CPNSS Research Associate Alexander Krauss is for anyone who wants to understand how we make discoveries.

New paper hot off the (pre-)press! We dig into the evolutionary origins of neural computations for behavioral control across mice, monkeys, and humans: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6....
As our lab's first foray into comparative analysis of neural dynamics, I’m super excited about this work! 1/18
London, San Francisco and Beijing achieve ‘remarkable reductions’ in #airpollution

This is a miraculous use of the passive voice.
War and capitalism do "degrowth by disaster". When we speak of the need for selective degrowth by design, just and ecological, it's because a 4-day work week is possible, sovereign access to renewables too, but we're trapped in dependency. Being this vulnerable is a choice of the system.
If you're not subscribed to Grounded Neuro by @rcfduarte.bsky.social, you're missing out.
"Grammarly curated a list of real people, gave its models free rein to hallucinate plausible-sounding advice on their behalf, and put it all behind a subscription. That's a deliberate choice to monetize the identities of real people without involving them, and it sucks." @caseynewton.bsky.social
All anyone is discussing is how fast gas supply & gas infrastructure can be expanded to meet AI demand. You will not hear the word "climate" uttered in any of those rooms; none of those guys are even pretending to give a shit any more. Boom times, boom mentality.
When you can't control wider events, you can only do the next right thing. For those of us in the climate fight, the next right thing is to bury the fossil fuel system that props up (actual and aspiring) dictators, impoverishes billions, and is used to justify barbaric wars.
SCOOP — Body camera footage obtained as a result of my lawsuit against the DC Metropolitan PD confirms DOGE and the Trump administration openly admitted they were entering private property when they raided the building on March 17, 2025. That didn't stop MPD from breaking down the doors.
My report:
Hahaha yes!
Brought my daughter to the @standupforscience.bsky.social rally in NYC this morning! But, fittingly, we couldn't stay long because we needed to get to her school science fair. A big part of what is lost with these cuts is the training of future generations of scientists.
Last year, this guy (left) from DOGE used ChatGPT to find NEH grants that were too “DEI” for Trump, and canceled them, including mine, as shown by the letter I received last April (right). Huge new NYT article on the back story link below

Interesting reports on an experiment conducted on X in 2023, in which users were randomly assigned to either an algorithmic or a chronological feed. Switching from a chronological to an algorithmic feed significantly shifted political opinions in a pro-Republican direction. cepr.org/voxeu/column...

Scientists and other experts were preparing an assessment of the health of nature in the US when Trump returned to the White House. He canceled the report. The researchers went ahead and compiled it on their own. This week, they released a 868-p draft for public comment and scientific review.
Recently, we asked for questions from readers about what local and state leaders are doing in response to the federal immigration crackdown.
Our new explainer shares some answers. Our entire team worked on this and it’s *really* worth a read:

The secretary of Miami-Dade County’s GOP started a group chat for conservative students — and within 3 weeks, it was filled with over 400 instances of the N-word, Nazi rhetoric and writings of "dozens of ways of violently killing Black people"
NIH funding is back in limbo, and it’s a mess. Between a 90% drop in new funding notices and White House spending blocks, only about 800 new awards have been made, less than a third of the usual rate.
If these "spend plans" don't clear soon, we’re looking at a major gap in biomedical research.
