All anyone is discussing is how fast gas supply & gas infrastructure can be expanded to meet AI demand. You will not hear the word "climate" uttered in any of those rooms; none of those guys are even pretending to give a shit any more. Boom times, boom mentality.

When you can't control wider events, you can only do the next right thing. For those of us in the climate fight, the next right thing is to bury the fossil fuel system that props up (actual and aspiring) dictators, impoverishes billions, and is used to justify barbaric wars.

Yea that's my intuition whenever anyone seeks "general principles": study all the individual cases and see if general principles emerge! (At least I think that's the best way for biology)

So I think the question is: is understanding species differences a more efficient route to understanding the brain compared to going hard on understanding individual species. I don't know!

In my own field of attention, we have findings in human fmri that show pretty strong modulation by attention in V1, but macaque ephys usually doesn't. It wouldn't be too hard to figure out if that's an fmri/ephys dif, but if not I think we need to know a lot more to understand the species difference

Way back in grad school I wrote about the problem of trying to pull out grand principles from mixed datasets. Of course there is a right way to do it by properly incorporating the differences. But it requires understanding the source of the differences, which is a huge research question on its own.

Good article. I agree we need to reconcile divides across recording methods & analytic approaches, but I'm less sure about species. It's hard to draw conclusions about species differences with limited data from each & I think it may be ok to mostly study species separately until comparison is easier
